More than 900 people have been killed and nearly 5,000 remain missing after a glacier-driven disaster unleashed devastating floods across Nepal and neighbouring Tibet.

Scientists are still investigating the precise trigger, but warming is increasingly destabilising glaciers, permafrost and mountain slopes across the Himalayas. The disaster also knocked out more than 10 per cent of Nepal’s power capacity, exposing the vulnerability of hydropower infrastructure built beneath unstable high-mountain terrain.

As Himalayan glaciers disappear at an accelerating pace, scientists warn that cascading hazards could become harder to predict – and more destructive downstream.

Singapore’s data centre boom is testing whether hydrogen fuel cells can ease the city-state’s tight power constraints.

A planned 20MW facility will trial solid oxide fuel cells to generate electricity on site, potentially providing reliable, lower-emission power for AI and cloud infrastructure. But hydrogen remains costly, and its environmental benefits depend on how the fuel is produced.

Experts say fuel cells will need to work alongside renewables, batteries and grid-stabilising technologies to meet AI’s volatile power demands.

“Philippines competing against many other countries is impossible. But Philippines being part of ASEAN that will compete against other countries is more powerful,” said Jose Ma. A. Concepcion III, Chairman, ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) 2026; Chairman, ASEAN-BAC Philippines.

His point set the tone for discussions on how ASEAN can work together to mobilise capital, strengthen resilience and respond to shared risks.

Unlocking capital for sustainability Philippines brought some 150 policymakers, investors, business leaders and civil society representatives to Manila on 19 August to examine how the Philippines and ASEAN can finance a more resilient future.

Discussions focused on moving from reactive responses to anticipatory action, while scaling investment in clean energy, grids and nature-based solutions. Speakers also highlighted the need for stronger regional cooperation, more bankable projects and financing that reaches communities and businesses on the ground.

For Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Emeritus George Barcelon, resilience starts with preparation:

“You can only talk about being resilient when you have the foresight to prepare.”

Eco-Business Founder and CEO Jessica Cheam pointed to the scale of the challenge facing the Philippines:

“The Philippines had already been ranked at least by one global study as the most disaster-prone country on Earth. It is, in other words, a country that spends enormous energy responding to disaster and not yet enough getting ahead of it.”

Dennis Wan, Market Director, APAC (excluding Japan and China), CDP, highlighted the need for collective action:

“Fighting climate change is the ultimate team sport. We need to know each other. We need to do this together.”

The 2026 edition is organised in partnership with ASEAN Business Advisory Council Philippines (ASEAN-BAC Philippines) and the UNEP Finance Initiative, with First Gen and the Net Zero Carbon Alliance (NZCA) as strategic partners, BDO as knowledge partner, and CDP as networking partner.

The event is supported by outreach partners: British Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, iMPACT, Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), Philippine Council of Associations and Association Executives (PCAAE), QBO Innovation, SustainabilityPH and Villgro Philippines.

The conversation continues in Singapore on 10 September at the next edition of Unlocking capital for sustainability.

COP31 has unveiled the Climate Implementation Bridge, or BRIDGE, to help countries turn climate plans into investment-ready projects.

The initiative aims to address persistent barriers including weak project preparation, limited institutional capacity and poor access to climate finance. But climate advocates warn that focusing on “bankable” projects could leave crucial adaptation, resilience and loss-and-damage needs behind.

They also say BRIDGE must address high borrowing costs and debt burdens rather than create another layer of climate finance initiatives.

The Philippines’ push to attract data centres is facing scrutiny as power shortages, high resource demands and geopolitical risks expose weaknesses in the country’s energy system.

Business leaders say the country should prioritise industries that create more jobs and strengthen domestic supply chains, rather than resource-intensive hyperscalers.

A single hyperscaler can require up to 1 GW of power, while the proposed Pax Silica hub in Pampanga could consume up to 3 GW of electricity and 39 billion litres of water annually.

The debate is whether the Philippines’ AI ambitions can deliver sustainable growth without worsening energy and resource pressures.

Japan’s Green AI has launched a Taiwan-focused platform to help manufacturers find cost-effective ways to cut energy use and emissions.

The system draws on more than 5,700 energy-saving and decarbonisation measures, tailored to Taiwan’s industries, electricity prices and emissions factors.

The launch comes as carbon pricing and new sustainability disclosure rules put greater pressure on Taiwanese companies to quantify and reduce emissions.

CIER says the tool could help smaller firms overcome the cost and expertise barriers to decarbonisation.

Maju Forest is forcing Singapore to confront how it values nature against development and demand for land.

“Singapore has sophisticated systems for planning development and assessing environmental impacts. The next step is to put ecological value more firmly into the equation,” writes Junice Yeo, Managing Partner & Head of Greater China, Eco-Business.

She calls for forests and other natural assets to be better valued in national planning before irreversible losses are made.

Asia’s healthcare systems face growing pressure as climate risks collide with ageing populations, chronic disease and workforce shortages.

Extreme heat, poor air quality and shifting disease patterns are adding to demand while disrupting healthcare delivery.

AIA Group Chief Healthcare Officer Kelvin Loh says the region must shift from treating illness to prevention, arguing that “resilience starts long before a crisis.”

He calls for stronger climate-health data, preventive care and cross-sector collaboration to build healthier, more climate-resilient societies.
