Most ethical leadership frameworks share the same blind spot — they treat ethics as a personality trait.
Honest. Fair. Trustworthy.

But ethics isn't something a leader has. It's something a leader does — repeatedly, under pressure, across an entire organisation.
The I Ching (易經) figured this out 3,000 years ago.

Embedded in its first hexagram is a four-stage model called 元亨利貞 (Yuan Heng Li Zhen):

🟣 Yuan (元) — Moral Generativity
Where does your leadership begin — from care and purpose, or extraction and control?
🟢 Heng (亨) — Relational Enablement
Does it build genuine capacity in others, or quietly manufacture dependence?
🟠 Li (利) — Just Value Realisation
Are promotions, recognition, and rewards actually morally legitimate?
🟡 Zhen (貞) — Principled Stability

Do your values hold when they become expensive?
Most leadership failures aren't about personal dishonesty. They're structural — good intentions, no system.
Yuan Heng Li Zhen is the system.

Read the full article to see how this ancient framework applies directly to boards, MNCs, and senior leadership teams today. 👇

Most leaders treat ethics as a personality trait. The I Ching disagrees. 元亨利貞 maps exactly how ethical leadership is generated, enacted, distributed, and sustained across an organisation. A diagnostic framework. Full article 👇

What if change isn't the problem?

What if the problem is not knowing which *kind* of change you're in?

There's a difference between a moment that calls for bold action and one that calls for patience, listening, and letting things settle.

Get it wrong, and even the best strategy fails.

The I Ching (易經), one of the oldest texts in Chinese philosophical tradition, was built precisely to answer this question.

Not as mysticism. As a leadership navigation system.

I've written a practical introduction to how it works and why it applies directly to the decisions you're making right now.

🐭🔥 The Rat in 2026 (Fire Horse Year 丙午年)

✍️ Dr. Desmond Ng

🔑 Keywords: Opportunity, Instability, and Emotional Balance

🧭 Introduction: Why 2026 Feels Uneven for the Rat

If you were born in the Year of the Rat, 2026 is likely to feel like a year of mixed signals. On one hand, you may experience recognition, support, and moments of comfort. On the other hand, sudden disruptions, emotional ups and downs, and financial or structural stress may appear without much warning.

⚖️ This is not a contradictory year by accident. It is a year where opportunity and instability exist at the same time.

📚 In Chinese metaphysics, this happens when empowering stars that lift status and wellbeing appear together with stars that disrupt structure, drain resources, and stir emotions. For the Rat, 2026 is not a smooth or predictable year, but it is a meaningful one.

✨ The main influences shaping the Rat in 2026 are:
• 🏛️ Tangfu (唐符)
• 🍲 Tianchu (天廚)
• ⚔️ Flying Blade (飛刃)
• 🧱 Year Breaker / Sui-Po (歲破)
• 💸 Great Consumption (大耗)
• 🚧 Barrier (欄杆)
• 😢 Heavenly Cry (天哭)
• ⚠️ Disaster Sha (災煞)

Each star describes a life theme rather than a fixed event. Together, they point to a year where Rats must learn to enjoy support when it is present, while staying alert and adaptable when conditions suddenly change.

🏛️ Tangfu (唐符): Recognition, Authority, and Being Taken Seriously

Tangfu (唐符) is a star of authority and official recognition. In simple terms, it suggests that in 2026, the Rat may be taken more seriously by people in positions of power.

This can show up as:
• 👔 Being trusted with greater responsibility
• 🏅 Receiving recognition from superiors or institutions
• 🗣️ Being asked to represent others or speak on their behalf
• 📊 Gaining credibility in professional or organisational settings

This star does not mean effortless success. It means expectations rise. When others see you as capable, they also expect you to deliver.

Tangfu supports Rats who are organised, reliable, and willing to take responsibility. It works best when you act with professionalism and restraint rather than arrogance.

📝 Practical advice:
Accept recognition with humility. Authority grows when others feel they can rely on you.

🍲 Tianchu (天廚): Support, Comfort, and Emotional Nourishment

Tianchu (天廚), often translated as Heavenly Kitchen, represents nourishment, comfort, and enjoyment of life. In everyday terms, this star brings moments where the Rat feels supported rather than pressured.

This may include:
• 💰 Stable income or material support
• 🎨 Enjoyment of food, art, creativity, or learning
• 🤝 Helpful people appearing at the right time
• 🛋️ A sense of emotional or physical comfort

Tianchu helps soften the harsher parts of the year. It reminds the Rat that rest, pleasure, and care are not luxuries but necessities.

However, this star can also tempt overindulgence. Eating too much, spending excessively, or becoming complacent can weaken its benefits.

📝 Practical advice:
Enjoy what nourishes you, but do not lose discipline. Comfort should restore energy, not drain it.

⚔️ Flying Blade (飛刃): Sudden Conflict and Risk

Flying Blade (飛刃) represents sudden tension, sharp words, and unexpected risk. In daily life, it often shows up as arguments, accidents, or situations that escalate quickly.

For Rats in 2026, this may feel like:
• 💥 Heated misunderstandings
• 🔥 Sudden confrontations
• 🚑 Increased accident risk when rushed or distracted
• 🐺 Competitive or aggressive people crossing your path

This star does not mean harm is inevitable. It means emotional reactions and speed increase danger.

📝 Practical advice:
Slow down. Avoid arguments when emotions are high. Be extra careful when tired, stressed, or in a hurry.

🧱 Year Breaker / Sui-Po (歲破): Instability and Structural Disruption

Sui-Po (歲破), often called the Year Breaker, represents instability and the weakening of existing structures. Unlike Flying Blade, which is sudden and sharp, Sui-Po works by slowly undermining stability.

In 2026, Rats may experience:
• 🔄 Disruption to plans
• 📉 Setbacks in projects or relationships
• 🏢 Tension with systems, institutions, or authority
• ❓ Feeling that what once worked no longer does

This star often forces reassessment. Something you relied on may need to be restructured or let go.

📝 Practical advice:
Do not cling to arrangements that are clearly weakening. Flexibility reduces damage.

💸 Great Consumption (大耗): Financial Drain and Energy Loss

Great Consumption (大耗) refers to significant outflow of resources. This is not about daily expenses, but larger or unavoidable drains.

This may include:
• 💥 Unexpected large expenses
• 🛠️ Repairs, losses, or financial leakage
• 💤 Emotional or physical exhaustion from over-giving
• ⚖️ Situations where effort exceeds return

This star warns Rats to manage money and energy carefully. Trying to “push through” losses often makes things worse.

📝 Practical advice:
Budget conservatively. Protect your energy. Not every problem needs to be solved with money or effort.

🚧 Barrier (欄杆): Delays and Frustration

Barrier (欄杆) represents obstruction rather than disaster. Things do not collapse, but they do not move smoothly either.

In 2026, Rats may encounter:
• 🗂️ Bureaucratic delays
• 📞 Miscommunication
• ⏳ Slow approvals
• 😤 Frustration from blocked progress

This star tests patience more than capability.

📝 Practical advice:
Adjust timelines. Expect delays. Persistence works better than force.

😢 Heavenly Cry (天哭): Emotional Sensitivity and Inner Weight

Heavenly Cry (天哭) affects emotions more than events. It increases sensitivity, introspection, and emotional fluctuation.

Rats may feel:
• 💭 More easily affected by words or memories
• 🌧️ Periods of sadness or nostalgia
• 🧠 Emotional fatigue without a clear cause
• 🌙 A need for solitude or reflection

This does not mean depression is certain. It means emotional care becomes important.

📝 Practical advice:
Talk to trusted people. Rest emotionally. Do not isolate yourself completely.

⚠️ Disaster Sha (災煞): Sudden Shock and Crisis Awareness

Disaster Sha (災煞) represents sudden external shocks. These can involve health, legal matters, accidents, or abrupt conflict.

This star does not guarantee crisis, but it shortens reaction time. When things happen, they happen quickly.

Rats benefit from:
• 📄 Being legally and financially prepared
• 🚫 Avoiding risky behaviour
• 🧘 Staying physically and mentally alert

📝 Practical advice:
Preparation reduces damage. Awareness is protection.

🔥🐭 Conclusion: The True Lesson of 2026 for the Rat

The Fire Horse year of 2026 is a year of contrast for the Rat.

You are supported through:
• 🏛️ Recognition and authority from Tangfu (唐符)
• 🍲 Comfort and nourishment from Tianchu (天廚)

You are tested through:
• ⚔️ Sudden conflict from Flying Blade (飛刃)
• 🧱 Structural instability from Sui-Po (歲破)
• 💸 Resource drain from Great Consumption (大耗)
• 🚧 Delays from Barrier (欄杆)
• 😢 Emotional sensitivity from Heavenly Cry (天哭)
• ⚠️ Sudden shocks from Disaster Sha (災煞)

The key lesson of the year is balance.

Opportunity exists, but it must be handled carefully. Comfort is available, but discipline is required. Change is present, but panic makes it worse.

Handled wisely, 2026 becomes a year where the Rat learns resilience, adaptability, and emotional maturity. It is not a year to rush forward blindly, but a year to move thoughtfully, conserve strength, and respond calmly when the unexpected appears.

🍲 Reunion, Rituals, and Renewal

📅 On Chinese New Year’s Eve (16th Feb 2026), all spring cleaning 🧹 must be completed before the reunion dinner 🍽️ begins. During the dinner 🍲, it is customary to serve dishes with auspicious meanings ✨, such as fish(年年有余) 🐟 to symbolise abundance 🌊, abalone 🐚 to represent nobility(貴氣)👑, prawns(財) 🦐 to signify wealth 💰, and roast meat(和谐) 🍖 to represent harmony 🤝. It is important to ensure that some food 🍚 is left over after the meal, as this symbolises having more than enough throughout the year ♾️. After the reunion dinner 🍽️, a bowl of five-grain rice(五谷米) 🌾 with sweet glutinous rice cake(年糕) 🍰 placed on top should be set on the dining table 🪑, symbolising a good harvest 🌾 and abundance 🌟 for the coming year.

Preparing for CNY 2026 Part 10

🌾 Auspicious Objects and Symbolic Placement

🪙 On each stalk of p***y willow 🌾, a pair of ancient Chinese coins 🪙 should be hung. Ideally, these should be “ancient” copper coins 🟤 from the reigns of prosperous emperors 👑 such as Qian Long(乾隆) and Kang Xi(康熙), as they are believed to enhance prosperity 💰 for the entire year ⏳. If these coins are unavailable, Singapore $1 coins 💵 may also be used, as they carry a similar symbolic effect ✨.

🕊️ In addition, it is customary to place at least one pair of decorative birds 🐦🐦 on the p***y willow 🌾, with up to eight pairs 🔢 being ideal, as the number eight represents prosperity 🌟. Ruyi knots(如億結) 🪢 should also be placed on each stalk 🌾 to help materialise wishes and aspirations 🌈.

🧭 The best location to place the p***y willow 🌾 is in the East or South-East sector 🧭 of the house 🏠.
