【Origins of Qing Ming Festival】 :
⛩ Qing Ming originally started out as a festival for the Emperors and high ranking officers during the Zhou dynasty (1125–255 BC).
⛩ During this period, they would perform solemn rites in ancestral temples.
⛩ It was only after the Han dynasty (206 BC–AD 23) that Qing Ming became a festival for the masses.
⛩ With prayers and offerings conducted at cemetery (graveyards) instead of ancestral temples.
⛩ Paying respects to the ancestors during the Qing Ming Festival, is a good opportunity for the family and descendants to acknowledge one’s ancestors, fulfill filial piety and for your ancestors to get to know their descendants.
⛩ Paying respects to the ancestors are similar whether it is done at a cemetery, columbarium or temple.
⛩ Hence, Qing Ming Festival, which is also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day or Ancestors’ Day, is symbolic and holds great significance to the Chinese since ancient times!
⛩ With its history dated back to more than two thousand years ago!
⛩ Qing Ming Festival is thus one of the most important festivals in Chinese traditional customs!
⛩ Qing Ming Festival usually falls on the 5th of April.
⛩ However, visits to the ancestral graves, niches or tablets can also be made 10 days before or 10 days after the actual day.
