Dear Runa,

My warmest congratulations on being named a Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for 2026. It is a deeply deserved recognition of a life devoted to serving humanity with courage, compassion and quiet determination.

We at Summit have had the privilege of witnessing a small part of that journey through our collaboration with Friendship in creating the 54 kW Friendship–Summit Solar Village in the remote Kabilpur char of Gaibandha. It reminded us that true development is not measured merely by infrastructure or numbers, but by the light it brings into people’s lives, sometimes quite literally.

Awards honour achievement, but the greater honour lies in the lives touched and hope created along the way. And you have enriched so many people and chars. May this recognition strengthen Friendship’s remarkable journey and inspire many more to believe in the dignity and potential of every human life.

Eid Al Adha Mubarak!

About the Mosque: Originally established in 1972, Kalakoir Central Jame Mosque in Kalakoir, Gazipur has long served the local community as a place of prayer and unity. As part of community development initiatives, the mosque was later rebuilt into a modern two-storied structure with improved facilities through the support of the Summit Gazipur 464 MW Power Plant.

Prothom Alo received an honourable mention for Alor Pathshala in the ‘Best Public Relations or Community Service Campaign (National Brand)’ category at the ‘Global Media Awards 2026’, organised by the International News Media Association - INMA in Germany among 960 submissions from 274 media organisations across 46 countries.

The Alor Pathshala programme began in 2009. Schools were established in remote areas of the country where no educational institutions existed, and educational activities have since been carried out there under the name ‘Alor Pathshala’. The initiative receives full financial support from Summit Group and the Anjuman & Aziz Charitable Trust

At present, there are two Alor Pathshala schools in Rajshahi, and one each in Kurigram, Bhola, Naogaon, Teknaf, Bandarban and Lakshmipur. A total of 1,650 students are studying free of charge in these eight schools. Over the past 16 years, nearly 25,000 students have received education in these schools. In addition, 1,500 people have also received vocational training.
