On 22nd April, NUS Cities and NUS College of Design & Engineering (CDE) graciously hosted the UAE Ambassador His Excellency Jamal Alsuwaidi and the UAESBC for a meeting to discuss opportunities for collaboration between the UAE government and NUS.
Before the meeting, NUS Cities and CDE gave the Embassy and UAESBC a tour of their grounds, of which the majority of the buildings are net zero! In attendance from NUS were Professor Kie Leong Teo (Dean, CDE), Professor Chye Kiang Heng (Deputy Dean, CDE), Professor Teng Chye Khoo (Director, NUS Cities), Professor Fong Chun Wah (Deputy Director, NUS Cities), Associate Professor H. Koon Wee (Visiting Associate Professor, Dept of Architecture and NUS Cities), Ms Yina Chua (Associate Director, NUS Cities) and Mr Chee Yuen Wan (Head, Office of Development, CDE). Representing the UAE Embassy were H.E. Jamal Al Suwaidi and Economic Researcher Mohamed Anas.
Professor Heng Chye Kiang, Deputy Dean of CDE, who was involved in the Dubai Future Councils and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, shared his experience working with the UAE and expanded on what the College of Design & Engineering offers to potential Emirati students.
H.E. Jamal shared the training needs for UAE's vision on Smart Sustainable Cities, and both faculties gave their insight as to how NUS can offer professional training for top-tier executives. Also mentioned during the discussion was the UAE's heaviest downpour in 75 years late last month, proving how timely the meeting was in drawing attention to climate change and climate solutions in urban development planning.
Thank you again to NUS Cities and CDE for a productive discussion!
