Introduction to Vertical Development and Leadership

In an age where change is the only constant, leaders face the daunting task of navigating through an ever-evolving landscape of challenges and opportunities. This requires a shift from traditional leadership paradigms to one that is more dynamic, adaptive, and holistic. Enter the concept of vertical development—a transformative approach that emphasizes not just the accumulation of skills and knowledge (horizontal development) but a deep evolution in how leaders perceive, think, and relate to the world around them. A vertical leader, therefore, is someone who has undergone this profound internal growth, enabling them to handle complexity with grace, lead with authenticity, and foster an environment of continuous learning and adaptation. Ever wondered what a day in the life of a vertical leader looks like? Let's take a closer look at the defining practices and experiences that shape their journey. Here is what a perfect day could look like:

Morning: Grounding and Setting Intentions

- 5:30 AM: Starts the day with a personal grounding practice, such as meditation or a mindfulness exercise, to cultivate presence and clarity. This practice helps the leader remain centered amidst the day's challenges.
- 6:00 AM: Engages in physical activity, like yoga or a morning run, recognizing the importance of a healthy body for a sharp mind and resilient leadership.
- 7:00 AM: Reviews personal and professional goals, setting intentions for the day. This includes identifying key tasks that align with their broader vision and purpose, ensuring that daily actions contribute to long-term objectives.

Mid-Morning: Fostering Team Engagement and Development

- 8:00 AM: Begins the workday by checking in with the team through a virtual stand-up meeting. Uses this time not just to discuss tasks but to connect with team members on a personal level, demonstrating emotional intelligence and fostering a culture of empathy.
- 9:00 AM: Dedicates time to one-on-one coaching sessions with team members, focusing on their development needs, challenges, and aspirations. These sessions are designed to empower team members, encouraging self-awareness and self-leadership.

Midday: Strategic Thinking and Collaboration

-12:00 PM: Takes a reflective lunch break, often spent in solitude or with a mentor/advisor, discussing perspectives and insights. This break serves as a time to recharge and reflect on the morning’s interactions and decisions.
-1:00 PM: Engages in strategic planning meetings, approaching complex problems with a systems thinking perspective. Promotes open dialogue, values diverse viewpoints, and leads the team in mapping out innovative solutions that consider the wider system's impact.

Afternoon: Adaptive Leadership and Continuous Learning

- 3:00 PM: Allocates time to work on adaptive challenges facing the organization. This involves leading a cross-functional task force, experimenting with new approaches, and learning from the outcomes, embodying the practice of adaptive leadership.
- 4:30 PM: Dedicates time to personal and professional development, possibly through reading the latest industry research, attending a webinar, or reflecting on feedback received. Recognizes that continuous learning is key to navigating the complexity of leadership.

Evening: Reflection and Connection

- 6:00 PM: Winds down the official workday with a team check-out, sharing successes and learnings of the day. This practice reinforces a culture of openness, shared learning, and collective growth.
- 7:00 PM: Engages in a personal hobby or spends quality time with family and friends, understanding the importance of work-life integration and the role of personal well-being in effective leadership.
- 9:00 PM: Ends the day with a reflection practice, reviewing the day’s achievements and areas for growth, both personally and professionally. Sets preliminary intentions for the next day, aligning them with their overarching vision for leadership and impact.

Throughout the Day:

- Practices Presence: Remains fully present in each moment, whether in meetings, during work, or in personal interactions, demonstrating the importance of mindfulness in leadership.
- Exemplifies Vulnerability and Authenticity: Shares personal learnings and vulnerabilities with the team, fostering a culture of trust and mutual support.
- Navigates Complexity with Grace: Faces challenges not as problems to be solved but as opportunities to grow, leading with curiosity and openness to change.

Reflect and Engage:

Could you envision adopting the day-to-day practices of a Vertical Leader for a day? What aspects do you find most challenging or rewarding? Share your thoughts on experimenting with these leadership practices in your daily routine and the potential impact it could have on your leadership style and team dynamics.

Have you ever felt like you're only using a fraction of your leadership potential? You're not alone. Many leaders, driven by fear and uncertainty, fail to tap into their full potential. But what if I told you there's a way to overcome this?

At Vertical Breakthrough, we've faced the challenge of helping leaders break free from their self-imposed limitations. We believe that transformation starts with self-awareness and the courage to face our blindspots. It's not an easy journey, but it's one that leads to purposeful leadership and a positive impact on the world.

To accomplish this, our favorite tool is the Leadership Circle Assessment. It helps leaders identify their strengths and areas for improvement, providing valuable insights for personal and professional growth. It's not about fixing what's wrong, but about unfolding what's already there.

We also believe in the power of teamwork and collaboration to scale Leadership effectiveness at company-wide level. That is where we leverage the Collective Leadership Assessment tool for Leadership teams or entire organizations. We debrief it during a dynamic workshop equipped with the Leadership Circle mat (as featured in the photo below taken during our latest Mat work workshop organized by Leadership Circle in Singapore). By fostering a safe and supportive space, we enable leaders to express their authentic selves, make informed decisions, and lead with passion, energy and purpose.

The result? Breakthrough transformations that not only improve business performance but also contribute to the common good. Leaders who once felt stuck now feel empowered and purpose-driven. They're not just surviving; they're thriving.

But don't just take our word for it. We invite you to experience this transformation for yourself. What's one Leadership or Culture challenge you're currently facing? Share your thoughts in the comments below or drop us a message.

Remember, keep going, keep growing. The world needs more conscious, purpose-driven leaders.

Imagine a Christmas tree, standing tall and proud, adorned with twinkling lights 🌟 and colourful ornaments. Each decoration represents a unique skill, a different facet of leadership. The tree itself? That's you, a leader in your field, constantly growing and evolving.

As we approach the festive season, let's remember that just as a Christmas tree🎄grows from a small seedling into a towering pine, leadership development is a journey. It's about nurturing your skills, just as you would care for a young tree. It involves executive coaching, training, empowering, culture transformation, and more. It's about fostering an environment of safety, compassion, authenticity, and collaboration.

But what happens when the tree stops growing? When the lights dim and the ornaments lose their shine? That's when stress, depression and burnout sets in. It's when the culture becomes toxic, and the leadership culture that once drove growth and performance is lost.

This is where we come in. We exist to evolve the conscious practice of leadership, to steward the planet, and to awaken us all to our inherent unity. We believe in the power of both self-improvement and self-unfoldment paradigms. We use cutting-edge coaching methods, like Aletheia coaching, Leadership Circle Assessment, Somatic and Trauma-informed Coaching, to help leaders tap into their innate resources and create lasting transformations.

In the spirit of Christmas, we at Vertical Breakthrough would like to offer the gift of executive coaching. A gift that keeps on giving, nurturing leaders to grow, evolve, and reach their full potential.

Executive coaching is not about adding more ornaments to your tree🎄. It's about nurturing the tree itself🌲, fostering growth, and ensuring it's strong enough to weather any storm 🌧 . It's about tapping into your innate resources, developing your leadership effectiveness, and facilitating a culture transformation within your organization.

This Christmas 🎅, give the gift of growth. Give the gift of executive coaching.

Our Christmas coaching packages (see link in comment below) are designed to help leaders navigate new challenges in 2024, enhance leadership effectiveness, and prevent stress and burnout. It's about creating a safe and supportive space for leaders to become more authentic, collaborative, and purposeful.

We exist to evolve the conscious practice of leadership, to steward the planet, and to awaken us all to our inherent unity. An organization cannot perform at a level higher than the consciousness of its leadership.

So, let's start with self 👨‍🌾 . Let's keep going, keep growing.🌲 Let's light up our trees with the glow of purposeful leadership. Let's make a positive difference in the world, together.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all the leaders out there. May your tree continue to grow and flourish in 2024!🎄

We had an exciting March working with the Executive Teams at Yara Pilbara in Perth (Australia) and Yara International Africa in Johanessburg (South Africa), running Leadership Team Culture Transformation Workshops, and meeting inspiring and passionated leaders across continents. The Culture Leadership Assessment (CLA) and Leadership Circle Profile (LCP) have proven to be breakthrough tools for raising leadership consciousness and driving culture transformation for organizations, leadership teams, and leaders from diverse backgrounds.
Spending 2-3 days with each organization and their leadership team, learning about their leadership culture, strengths, and blind spots, has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Witnessing breakthroughs and newfound awareness is always a highlight for US.
As we travel with the Leadership Circle mat across various regions and clients, we have noticed a common issue - a lack of work-life balance. Ambition and drive have been valued so highly at the expense of people's well-being, leading to a decline in mentoring and development and system thinking. The high-pressure work culture has taken its toll on sustainable productivity and work-life balance, and we need to prioritize kindness and reclaim our lives and mental health.
Fortunately, we don't need to compromise work-life balance for results. By working smarter and putting people first, we can generate better business performance and ensure sustainable productivity.

Empower Your Organization with Leadership Consulting Services. Vertical Breakthrough Pte. Ltd. is adept at helping organizations transform Leadership Teams and Organizational Collective Effectiveness. Imagine teams of leaders who can manage both competing priorities and understand the tremendous opportunities at play across your business.
