Looking at the camera on your device continuously during a media interview will add credibility to you & your organisation. You are more likely to connect with your audience because you’ll be looking us in the eye, as you deliver your message. Resist the natural tendency to look at face of the journalist on your screen & look at your camera.

The insights shared by Joanne Lin from the ISEAS-Yusok Ishak Institute on ‘The State of Southeast Asia 2026 Survey Report’ are worth hearing.

1. Start by acknowledging audience: “It really is a honour to be here tonight, to be amongst so many people that I admire”
2. During speech refer to audience with phrases like: “…most of us in this room, I would think also agree with that…” “…it’s been a rallying call for me and I hope for you…”
3. Finish by inviting audience to do something: “I’d like you to raise a glass to something that is sadly lacking in this world right now, to kindness!”

Try these expressions or something similar when you’re speaking this week.

Journalists - just like us - love a story about overcoming adversity. If that story includes random acts of kindness from strangers, then the media will be even more interested to report the incident. It’s worth noting - as is always the case for us too - that the “Good Samaritans” who stopped to help, paid a price. One with his immediate physical well being, the other giving up his personal best time. All three runners are reportedly fine now. If you’re involved in an adverse situation today or you stop to help someone who’s suffering at a major event - you might be called by a journalist to tell your story!

Extremely grateful that each year companies continue to use my voice to promote their products, people & events. In between coaching sessions I’m lucky enough to be selected to record scripts for advertisements & corporate videos. Thank you to those who continue to choose my voice to help achieve their business goals.

Second press conference on the day after a major fire at an oil refinery in Australia. Note the tag team approach between Fire Fighting Authorities & company representatives. Note: the constant use of phrases like that will be part of the full investigation into this incident; answers are kept short; briefing concludes with invitation to local community to attend a meeting at 6pm that day. Are you ready to handle the media when a crisis strikes your organisation?

9 hours after a fire started at an oil refinery in Australia, Fire & Rescue Victoria’s Mick McGuinness & CEO Viva Energy Scott Wyatt held a press conference to explain what happened & what they are doing in response.
Note the tag team approach - fireman outlines chronology of events & answers Qs about fire. Company CEO answers questions about impact of fire on fuel supplies.
Notice how the CEO does NOT repeat the negative language in the first question put to him
Q “Is this your worst nightmare?”
A “It’s a very challenging incident…”

I advise my clients to write their message down & read it verbatim. Obviously these two men have received a lot of media training as they conducted this stand up media briefing without any notes.

If you need help rehearsing your press conferences, let me know before a crisis strikes your organisation. It’s not if but when it will happen and are you ready to handle the media?

Does the message you’re delivering to your stakeholders actually mean anything or is just generic gibberish? Always ask yourself what am I trying to say here? Be as clear & specific as possible. Don’t forget to include a ‘for example’ story that explains your message.
