We used to refer to these mystery toy dispensers as Tikam Tikam Toy Machine. It was likened to “gambling” and it was an EVIL way for these enterprising “entrepreneurs” to suck gullible school kids out of their pocket money.

Just insert a coin, turn the k**b and cross your fingers that the random pick is a big ticket item and not some small consolation prize like a cheap eraser.
▫️
They were found in front of housing estate provision stores and toy stores.
▫️
You can still find them in the older neighbourhoods like Toa Payoh and Tanglin Halt. They have mostly been replaced by fancier Gashapon (ガシャポン), also called Gachapon (ガチャポン) capsule toy machines. Go check out any Don Don Donki storefront!

In the movie Cloud Atlas, Doona Bae plays Somni-451, a clone bred for work in nightmarish cafe. Clones are treated as slave labor by the 'pureblood' society, who stunt the clones' consciousness through chemical manipulation.
Back in the real world, we are manipulated by some of these dangerous ideas:

1. The people in charge have all the answers. That’s why they are so wealthy and happy and healthy and powerful.
2. The best and brightest follow the rules. You will be rewarded for your subordination.
3. What the books say is always true.
4. There is a very clear, single path to success. It’s called college.
5. The purpose of your education is your future career. And so you will be taught to be a good worker.

Like Somni-451, you have to teach yourself how to be something more.

Thomas Friedman wrote a brilliant article "It’s P(Assion)Q And C(Uriosity)Q, As Much As IQ". He explained why we have record productivity, wealth and innovation, yet median incomes are falling, inequality is rising and high unemployment remains persistent. It's not going to be easy for people who want to stick to the old ways of doing things.
