Today I am beaming with pride. I put the final touches on a 5 month long Innovation Project with a global F&B powerhouse. Without a doubt my most challenging and rewarding these past 10 years at INVITRO INNOVATION.

First off, this project was supposed to happen in market in Japan in early 2020. No one was convinced we could pull this off remotely and so the project was put on ice.

Thankfully, a remote version of the project kicked off in Jan 2021 and I could not be prouder of where we landed.

A couple wins worth mentioning:
- Introducing a new way to Innovate - Experiential Innovation, not just product innovation. Something I believe passionately in and my brave clients jumped right in (more about this in another post).
- Deep Consumer Immersion, conducted remotely with the brilliant Fall and her North Asia Trends and Research team at Consumer Intelligence.
- 100% remote Innovation workshop over 5 half days using Miro and Zoom. We were able to add simultaneous Japanese/ English translation to our 5 day Workshop. Delivered flawlessly by Yumiko Uno and team with facilitation support by the multi-talented Tomoko Yaji.
- My clients put 100% faith in me being able to pull this off and were open to learning the tools I have used non stop these past 15 months.

We are ready to roll on our second cohort of Serious Play for Innovation 18-20 Nov (1400-1700 SGT). Now You Can Innovate from Everywhere!

Well to tell the truth we had had the ability to Innovate from anywhere and everywhere with everyone for as long as video conferencing capabilities have been around. Early video conference capabilities go back 40 years but accessible video conference arrived with Skype in 2003, some 17 years ago. And yet we never fully embraced virtual meetings, workshops and conferences till much much later.

Why is that?

My theory is that the typical workshops and meeting have grown in size over the years to accommodate multiple stakeholders who are essential to co-create solutions, and simple video conference technology was insufficient to deliver sustained participant engagement beyond a 30 minute meeting. Real breakthroughs were just not destined to happen in such an environment of video talking heads and powerpoint presentations.

The arrival of the collaboration tools such as Google Drive, Mural, Miro (RealtimeBoard), Trello and Video Communications such as Zoom some 9 years ago paved the way for real remote collaboration. While these tools have been widely adopted in agile businesses, they have been slow to diffuse in mainstream industry. Truth is people still prefer the spontaneity and social aspect of in-person meetings.

It has taken a once in a lifetime health pandemic with zero travel, almost universal working from home and social distancing requirements for us to explore what has been out there for almost a decade. The levels of exploration and experimentation are breathe taking.

Put on your seatbelts folks it's going to be one hell of a ride!

The past weeks have been a flurry of firsts as work moves 100% virtual.

Two big achievements for me and Invitro Innovation, first, I facilitated a 4 day fully online Digital Experience Blueprint set of workshops with a global agency in digital transformation. We had an average of 25pax per session from across China, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. It was a great opportunity to practice virtual facilitation and test out some great meeting tools such as MS Teams and Stormz.me.

Secondly, I was a participant in the The 4th Global Virtual Design Sprint, a wonderful learning experience with other innovators across the global. We worked on solving challenges within Remote and Blended Learning for school kids.

I joined the Global Virtual Design Sprint as a participant last week. This week is our 5 day sprint, our team is working on New ideas around Remote Learning. Our first session was this past Saturday and we worked on our Team charter using mural.
