For commercial rooftops, there are a few practical considerations that are worth addressing early:

1. Roof constraints
Load limits, setbacks, skylights and shading can all affect the usable roof area. Understanding the roof’s structural capacity and layout early helps inform a more practical system design.

2. Permitting and design
Technical documentation and grid requirements need to be considered from the outset. Reviewing the design and submission requirements early can help avoid unnecessary revisions later.

3. Working around an operating facility
Commercial sites rarely stop operating for a solar installation. Procurement, site access, installation and grid connection need to be coordinated around the facility’s day-to-day activities.

These may seem like small details at the planning stage, but addressing them early can make a significant difference once work begins on site. Good planning helps keep the installation safe, efficient and set up for reliable performance over the life of the system.

Our team had the pleasure of delivering a full turnkey rooftop solar integration for Singapore Management University. Eigen managed the project end to end, from system design and engineering through installation, integration and final commissioning.

Working within a busy urban campus meant planning carefully around existing spaces and daily activities, while making sure the solar system could be integrated smoothly.

If you are a JTC tenant, do you actually need to install solar? The short answer is: it depends on your lease and your rooftop.

JTC’s mandatory solar requirement only applies when both conditions are met: at least 800 sqm of contiguous rooftop area and 15 years or more remaining on the lease. If either condition is not met, solar is voluntary. That said, rooftop works still require the appropriate written consent from JTC.
