I find it surprising that some direct selling companies I have worked with still view ASEAN as small, underdeveloped countries that donโ€™t merit focused investment. The reality is that ASEAN includes some of the fastest growing markets for direct selling in the world and represents a huge opportunity for visionary companies. Even in our current global environment of trade wars and protectionism, ASEAN countries have taken a more pragmatic and stable approach, avoiding high retaliatory tariffs and other trade barriers, making them some of the most strategically sound markets in the world.

Several years ago, I set up a company in Indonesia. At the time, I was living in Singapore and made frequent trips to Jakarta to oversee the process. While there were plenty of hotel options, I kept returning to one particular hotel, not for its location, but for its truly exceptional service. After my very first stay, they began reserving the same upgraded room for me, greeted me by name, and made check-in a breeze. I used to travel every few weeks to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As I walked toward the customs declaration desk, this sign reminded travelers that unregistered personal care and nutrition products are prohibitedโ€”even for personal use. While I was never questioned about the hygiene items in my own luggage, the message was clear: compliance matters.

Many direct selling companies use Not-For-Resale (NFR) programs to reach customers in markets they havenโ€™t officially entered. While effective in some countries, the sign served as a reminder that NFR programs aren't permitted everywhere. In places like Malaysia, customs authorities can take action against companies or their consultants for violating these rules.

True market leadership isnโ€™t just about revenueโ€”itโ€™s about operating responsibly and sustainably. As the worldโ€™s 6th largest direct selling market, Malaysia demands that companies get it right.
