Huang Jian, 52, has been ordered by the Court to pay a total of $14,160 in penalties and fines for omitting rental income in her Income Tax returns, providing incorrect information to reduce her tax liability and obstructing IRAS officers from carrying out their investigative duties – the first person to be charged and convicted for doing so.

Huang had omitted $55,965 of rental income derived from the three properties she co-owned with her husband in her Income Tax returns for Years of Assessment 2009 – 2012, resulting in a total of $2,850 of tax undercharged. Huang had also submitted an incorrect bank statement to support her claim for deduction of mortgage loan interest expenses against her rental income to reduce her tax liability.

In addition, Huang had refused to comply with IRAS investigators and locked herself in the bedroom during inspections. She also threw relevant documents out of her bedroom window.

The ICA will introduce a new FIN series with the prefix M from 1 January 2022. Similar to the format of the F and G FIN series, the new M FIN series will start with the prefix M, followed by seven digits and a checksum letter (e.g. M1234567B). Foreigners who are currently assigned with the F and G FIN series will not be affected by the introduction of the M FIN series.
