As part of our reopening, we will also make available a unit of the DOVE Diamond Inspector for anyone to drop by and screen your own diamonds at no cost for the entire month.

Ghostly sightings in a diamond?!

While the Taoists and Buddhists are ā€œcelebratingā€ the Hungry Ghost Festival during this period, a natural diamond jewellery was submitted for GemRight confirmation and grading.

As we visually inspect the diamonds after our preliminary DOVE DUV testing, something ā€œfloatedā€ in front of us - an ethereal cube-like (or less well-formed octahedral) arrangement of pinpoints that aligned with the concentric growth pattern of natural diamonds.

We are certainly spooked to be able to provide trusted identification and grading by the trade and public alike.



For those curious, the Hungry Ghost Festival takes place during the 7th lunar month, which is from 13 August to 10 September 2026.

Sharing some of items submitted during the Singapore International Jewellery Expo during July 2026.

The astute prospective buyer of this 10+ carat sapphire wanted a GemRight opinion before confirming the purchase.

Here are some of the inclusion scenes captured from the gemstone. Swipe left to see a different caption for each photo.

1. A typical partially-healed discoid fracture complete with a healing rim and an altered crystal.

2. The fracture, like this glassy-looking one captured, happens when the crystal inclusion is subjected to artificial heat and expands faster than the host material. This expansion results in a tension that results in a small internal fracture.

3. An attempt in poetic photomicrography, featuring the silhouette of a glassy discoidal fracture against the imposing parallel colour bands that probably lost their sharp edges during to the heating process.

4. Another partially healed fracture. Note that the altered crystal is not obvious. This is because there isnā€™t one. In its place, we see a very small stationary bubble trapped.

5. Another glassy discoid fracture with a healing rim.

6. Along a growth tube, we can note the presence of partially healed fractures and healing rims. Some growth tubes contain crystals and/or liquid inclusions that can expand during the heating process.

GemRight is evolving ā€” again.

From 2 September 2026, Wednesday, we will begin a new chapter at Far East Shopping Centre, #03-29.

This relocation is more than a change of address.

It gives us the opportunity to rethink how GemRight can serve the gem and jewellery community. Through stronger laboratory services, expanded gemological capabilities, more accessible education, and new spaces for learning, discussion and connection.

Some things will remain unchanged too: private consultation, our commitment to scientific evidence and objectivity, and our current 2026 testing fees.

Over the coming weeks, we will share more about the new services, workshops, Gem Briefs, Gemstone Night and other initiatives taking shape in our new home.

For now, here is a first look at what to expect.

FYI GemRight will be closed for relocation from 29 August to 1 September 2026 and will reopen at Far East Shopping Centre on 2 September, Wednesday.

Inclusions in fei cui jadeite jades often allow for perceptions of imageries that evoke certain cultural and aesthetic elements.

One of these are described among the Chinese-speaking trade as ā€œsnowflake cottonā€ or ā€œé›ŖčŠ±ę£‰ā€ for looking like falling snow or puffs of cotton.

These inclusions, often albite 钠é•æēŸ³ in nature, can be found in both Burmese and Guatemalan materials. While not conclusive, the trade often use their appearance as a way to differentiate between the two origins.

This post attempts to take you up close this inclusion from the 2 geographical origins, each beautiful in their own ways. Swipe left to see more!

3: another inclusion in a Guatemalan material. Likewise, there is irregularity in shape and a lack of density without a clear edge. In certain angles, this inclusion can cast a dark shadow within itself to look non-white.

5: We now shift our focus to Burmese materials. Note the clear contrast between the inclusion and the host material, and a sense of density and opaque-ness.

7: these inclusions are close to the surface of the Burmese sample which we can use any usual lighting to see its appearance and colour.

8: Here, we show the same inclusion under different lighting source. Using transmitted light from our darkfield chamber, some inclusions can look dark/gray/black-ish. This is because of the dense, opaque nature of the inclusions. Swipe to see how different they look!

Screening natural diamonds from synthetics and imitations using DOVE Diamond Inspector

We received an item for gemological identification and grading through our mail-in programme. The sender has indicated that the colourless stones are natural diamonds. Advanced gemological testing using Raman and UV-Vis-NIR has concluded that the stones on this bracelet are cubic zirconia (CZ).

We then put this bracelet through our DOVE inspector to check for its accuracy and reactions. As expected, the stones did not give any reaction under DUV which we can quickly screen that they are not diamonds and likely imitations.

Throwback to the next leg of the expedition to China!

Certainly not missing out on the best chance to access the largest variety of pearls both fresh and saltwater! This part of Zhejiang used to have all the right conditions for pearl farming and hence, a trade centre was built to facilitate the selling of these pearls. Pearl farming has since expanded/shifted to many other parts of China but this trade centre has endured as a gathering point for anyone who wish to start a business in pearls. Even the suppliers to many international brands have a retail shopfront here too, albeit with more selective access. You can find a variety of price and quality points that will work for businesses of different stage.

This grew to house a rather complete ecosystem: from suppliers of pearls, to designers, finished jewellery, jewellery findings for pearls, logistics, accessories, imitation pearls, etc.

This expedition is happening again first half of November 2026. It is the opportunity to learn how to select pearls firsthand, learn about pearl treatments, expand into the lucrative pearl market, buy quality pearls for your business, talk to numerous new suppliers, plan new designs based on the latest farming technology.

Throwback to our visit to Sihui, Guangdong, one of the important cities in China to learn, experience and choose jadeite jade.

Many great carvers migrated southwards from Beijing area to Guangdong and Fujian after the end of the Qing dynasty. From wood to stone to, of course, jade. There is a market in this region also because of how Hong Kong grew into a bustling trading port at that time, of which ornamental carvings can be sold through Hong Kong. As trade grew, Hong Kong residents also grew in affluence and they themselves became a destination for high quality jadeite jewellery. Jadeite remains a revered gemstone with the Qing royaltyā€™s love for them still fresh in mind.

So if you think such expeditions are just about buying for selling, that will be an understatement. There is so much to uncover during the time there together!

Our next jadeite expedition is in early Nov 2026. DM to enquire for an experience not to be missed.
