“Be there for others, but never leave yourself behind.” Dodinsky

Ladies, it is time to put yourself on your to-do list!

Staggering data from various studies (HBR, Ipsos, Herstory, etc), reveal that 70-80% of women often put their self-care last after work, family, and other obligations. Yes! Women are battling a self-care deficit. This can lead to increased stress, burnout, and a disconnect from what fuels our joy and passion. We juggle careers, family, and endless responsibilities, often leaving little room for ourselves. It is time to change that narrative.

I have been there—prioritizing everything and everyone above myself until I realized I was running on empty. Last year, I took a leap of faith and joined a restorative retreat led by S***a Vaidyanathan at BeingSattvaa Resort - it was nothing short of transformative. The personal and professional growth I experienced was profound, and it is something I believe every woman deserves.

I want the same for you! That is why I am excited to extend this personal invitation to the "Journey to Bliss and Balance" Women's Retreat at BeingSattvaa in Ubud, Bali, from April 24th to 28th, 2024.
This is not just a getaway; it is a deep dive into self-care for your mind, body, and spirit.

Imagine stepping away from the daily grind to restore your inner balance with restorative yoga and mindful quiet time.

Picture yourself gaining fresh perspectives through reflective journaling workshops and empowering coaching sessions.

Visualize rejuvenating your body with nourishing meals and gentle yoga amid Bali's serene beauty.

Envision reconnecting with your true self through deep healing sessions and personal reflection time.

And think of the invaluable social connections you will make with like-minded women, fostering a community that supports each other's growth.

Last year's retreat was a turning point for me. It was not just about relaxation; it was about transformation—professionally I soared, personally, I found peace, and spiritually I connected with a community of women who understood the journey. It gave me clarity, courage, and the balance I needed to craft a life of greater meaning - on my terms.

Do not let another year pass without giving yourself the gift of time and space to simply be. It's time to invest in ourselves.
We have just 4 more spots, so secure your place in this life-changing retreat today.
Let us embark on this journey together. Secure your spot now and join the tribe of women ready to embrace self-care and empowerment. Because when we thrive, everything around us flourishes too.

Your future self will thank you.

"...not everything that's measured is valuable and not everything that is valuable can be measured"

Do you see where I'm going with this?

For so long, we've been trying to keep our impact on society under the CSR initiatives. We do a ton of green washing - we talk about using organic products and sourcing organic ingredients and using ethical processes.

We talk about what we do, but we forget to measure the impact of what we did!

We forget to see what happened after we sourced our products from organic farms, did they actually receive the benefits?

We forget to see who we are sourcing from, did the finances get evenly distributed across society through us?

We forget to see who's involved in the ethical process, did the pipeline had imbalance of genders?

And that is why, together with OV Maldives we're aiming towards measuring our impact - positive and negative - on the society we function in. On the society that we benefit from.

Why?

Because we didn't do it till now, doesn't mean we can't do it from now.
This is our way of , what is yours?

World Tourism Day 2022: Rethinking Tourism

As the world recovers slowly from the pandemic, it is imperative that we rethink how we look at tourism as an industry, how we conduct tourism businesses and how we travel as tourists. It is critical that we rethink how we can empower our workforce to be more inclusive and how we can strengthen and focus our work towards gender equality.

World Women Tourism is committed towards leading change in the tourism and hospitality industry and leading organisations to rethink the way tourism businesses are done.

Our team at WWT, Nisha Abm and Prachi Thakur are partnering with the Academy of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Center for Leadership and Entrepreneurship this year to organise an event that will address a critical dialogue regarding the challenges facing women in our industry and how we can empower our workforce to be more inclusive for a sustainable future.

Join us at ACA Nepal, on the 27th Sep at 11am as we pave the way towards rethinking tourism and hospitality.

Season 3 Episode 4: Empowering diverse voices in travel writing

Travel journalism is often described as being an insular and nepotistic enterprise. Though travel is so diverse, it is ironic that travel stories are usually dominated by a white, older person’s gaze.
There is a lack of visibility of writers from the BIPOC community. Travel journalists of color have to work much harder to assert their expertise and credibility. There is a need for a more representative pool of travel writers sharing their impressions of the world and more effort should be placed into the non-western world to drive travel narratives. Certainly, diverse perspectives will enrich our world view and amplify our humanity.

In this episode, Dr Nisha Abu Bakar have the pleasure of speaking with the gorgeous Sarah Khan, Sarah is an award-winning travel journalist who’s reported from six continents for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Condé Nast Traveller, Food & Wine, Travel + Leisure, Bloomberg, Robb Report, and numerous other publications, and most recently was Editor in Chief of Condé Nast Traveller Middle East. Her work also appears in The Best American Travel Writing 2021 and New York Times 36 Hours: 150 Cities from Abu Dhabi to Zurich. She’s a connoisseur of global junk food, a hoarder of hotel pens, and a master at sleeping through long-haul flights; she’s lived in six countries on three continents and possesses 2.5 passports. She is also the co-founder of Travel Is Better in Color, that celebrates the varied voices in travel media and bringing the world to life with their unique perspectives.
More information on Sarah Khan on http://bysarahkhan.com/

Key points discussed in this episode:

1. Travel journalism is often described as an insular, nepotistic enterprise. Has this changed over the years? What were some of Sarah's challenges in breaking the barriers?
2. What motivated Sarah to start the initiative "Travel is Better in Color"?
3. Why is it important to have the representation of the female gaze in travel writing, particularly, with the increase in female travel market?
4. Has the travel storytelling sphere evolved in unexpected ways since the start of COVID?
5. What are her challenges as a Muslim women traveller and travel writer?

Can we achieve gender equality in law by 2030?

The answer is NO.

Although women and girls make up half of the world's population, no country has achieved gender equality.

According to UN Women and the UNITED NATIONS DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL AFFAIRS, the pandemic, conflict, climate change, and other global challenges are exacerbating gender disparities.

At the current rate of progress, women may not have the same legal rights and protections as men for another 286 years. 🤯

Today, the tourism industry plays a significant role in the world's largest economic activities. Without exaggeration, the hospitality industry, which has long been dominated by men, is currently undergoing a revolution and establishing itself as a "sophisticated industry" for women. Women are taking on dynamic roles across most of the verticals due to the nature and diversity of this industry. Women have been joining various sections of the industry with expanded power over the previous decade, whether it is hotels, restaurants, or first-class lavish inns.

Women in the hospitality industry have faced numerous challenges throughout their careers. Over the last two decades, women's significant advancement in educational attainment has not translated into a practically comparable improvement in their position at work. In many parts of the world, women are more likely than men to become and remain unemployed, have fewer opportunities to work, and when they do, they frequently accept lower-paying jobs.

Women avoid jobs in the hospitality industry because of the long, inflexible work hours and the lack of maternity leave, among other factors. Irrespectively, women are extremely vulnerable to male coworker competition due to difficult obstacles such as parenthood, family, and stereotyping.

It becomes more difficult due to demands that discourage women from entering the industry. The tourism industry can improve and become a better platform for women to work in by providing a flexible working environment, developing mentoring programs, providing transparency in recruitment, and rewarding women with awards and recognition. Seeing the capability of female representatives as they go the extra mile in the service center, these suggestions can help to remove some of the practical barriers to women's participation in the hospitality work environment.

Women's economic empowerment increases productivity, diversification, and income equality, among other positive development outcomes.

It has been proved that when women perform better, economies perform better and women's empowerment is critical to poverty reduction and economic growth!
