🔥60 years in the drilling game🔥
Massive shout out to our friend, consultant and jack of all trades Alan mcConnon on reaching an outstanding 60 active years in the drilling industry. 🍻🎂

Below is a brief history of Alan's career which started in Papua New Guinea.

Koranga gold mine in Wau New Guinea The boys would drill holes with a bar and cross bit by hand to crack the big stones. Ron his father made him a short bar and he would get up there with the boys and have a go to. They brought two Hands England man portable machines to drill the bed rock. Ron taught the boys to operate the drills. So he would follow them around drilling the bed rock for blasting. The boys would let him have a go sometimes I was 9 years old then.

At West Leichardt Station just out of mt Isa 1964 Peter Addby and Ron Croft had a Mud puncher on the station. On his weekends from school he would go down and give them a hand and learn a bit about drilling.

April 5th 1965 Alan started as an Offsider for Glindermann and Kitching. He started underground at MT Isa mines for Glindemann and Kitching when he was 15 years. His supervisor was Bob Coughlan and his Driller was Henry Kopesala. Bob and Herry had him drilling in two weeks. They finished the contract in three months. Bob said were taking the E 1000 Drill with a tripod to Einasliegh starting getting it Loaded your going to be the number two Driller and Johnny Geraston will be number one driller. As time went on working with Bob he become a second father to Alan. Bob was the best deep hole driller is Aus. He also was one of the toughest men is Isa nobody crossed Bob.

Alan worked all over QLD and NT and a bit in WA and Back to Wau In PNG. He worked his way from Offsider, Driller Shift Boss, Supervisor, Foreman, Operations manager to Manager. He worked Glindermann and Kitching for 25 years.

He went to Leanda drilling Charters towers for two years as Operations manager. He moved to North Queensland Energy Drilling deep Gas wells in the Bowen Basin as Operations manager then Field manager for 5 years. He then joined Ausdrill who bought Leanda drilling out back in Charters Towers. He was Drilling Supervisor for the one month later put up to Operations manager and a short time later Exploration Manager.

Ausdrill wanted Alan to go to Chile relieve Dave Stephans when he got there they wanted him to stay. They went from four drills to 10 drills. He worked Ausdrill for Eight years>

He then had an offer to work for Harris Drilling in Chile as Operations and training Manager they only had 6 R/C drills. They bought 1 UDR 650, One UDR 1000, and one UDR 1200 and one more 685 Schramm.

He stayed with Harris for 5 years as he promised them.

Major Drilling in Chile had been Chasing him for a few years so he moved to La Serana in Chile as Operations Manager. They had 36 running and more drills coming they ended up with 60 different drills in Chile. Major wanted Alan to go back to Australia for them.

He then went to Ghana West Africa to work for Geodrill as Training Manager when he got there Terry said and you’re the Operations manager as well. I knew Terry really well back in Leanda drilling. So I did both. We had 16 drills running. After a few years work slowed down in Ghana, so he went back to Aus and worked for Queensland Gold mines at Georgetown. He was home on Break Terry called him can you come back we’ve got some deep direction holes to drill, So he went back to Ghana fly in fly out until Covid came and it become to hard fly back to Ghana.

Now he is working with Tiger Fluids and Corex Drilling.

He said the two best Drilling Companies he has worked for were Glindemann and Kitching and Geodrill in West Africa

April the 5th three days ago was his 60 years up drilling none stop only when covid came.
