The Philatelic Journalist: Now Digital or Print

The recently released No. 179 marked the first issue of The Philatelic Journalist to be made available to AIJP members in either digital (€40 per annum) or printed format (€60 per annum).
According to its statutes, the AIJP brings together individuals and institutions active in the philatelic press, as well as in the production, promotion and distribution of philatelic literature. In other words, it serves all those concerned with expanding the philatelic footprint in the wider world of communication and culture, whether or not they identify themselves as journalists or authors.

On 1 May postage stamps were sold for the very first time but were unable to be used until 6 May when they officially entered circulation.

One of our favourite letters from our collection that was sent using a Penny Black is this illustrated clerical envelope was sent from Kelso to Glasgow on 15 January 1841. Inside the envelope is written:

"I hope you are shocked at my wicked envelope. Does not one likeness remind you of the Dean of St. Judes? Your Uncle with his usual quickness will find out what I mean - a strong resemblance.

The item is part of the RM Phillips Collection, a donation of Victorian stamps gifted to the nation and now cared for by our museum. Discover more about this historically significant collection below.
