My husband Andrรฉ van Kempen and I before we meet experienced burnout and compassion fatigue. In Andre's case it was also in a combination with drug abuse. All that was followed with living in different countries, ending long-term relationships and switching careers. We learned our lessons the hard way - and we payed a high price for not taking care of ourselves and our mental health.
Four years ago when we met and started working together we decided we will do our best to help others NOT TO go through the same issues we had to deal with. We thought we learned and mastered the ways how to help ourselves and bounce back from life challenges...
But then COVID happened and to be honest at that time we worked more than ever....
Most of the stuff we did was on a voluntary basis, like webinars, free sessions, HR masterminds to support people in need...and we loved it...but...as you can expect, that didn't end up well for us.
Although we helped a lot of people, made tons of connections, did some quite cool things...I ended up with some serious health issues and Andre totally exhausted on the verge of a burnout.
We haven't "mastered" the knowledge of recovery...we felt ashamed and confused... how could this happen again to us?
But it took us some time to realize - that wasn't the point at all...we got something more valuable - we learned a more valuable lesson - how to start again.
We changed our environment, moved to another country and made a break when it comes to the topics of wellbeing and switched our profession and focus in a bit different direction - e-learning.
But something was missing...connection with others, sharing, supporting people and just doing our work like we did before - with a lot of passion, drive and inner motivation, because that is how we do feel when we talk about wellbeing at work and mental health.
So once again, we needed to be honest with ourselves, we needed to admit that we want to continue where we started, we want to support others become their own best support and be more resilient.
We had to face a lot of inner out outer obstacles to come to this conclusion and start again...actually to go back to what we always wanted to do....
And that my friends is something we call RESILIENCE!
