APPLICATIONS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN AGRICULTURE

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become one of the most important technologies in every sector, including agriculture. In the agriculture sector, it is playing a very crucial role, and it is transforming the agriculture industry. AI saves the agriculture sector from different factors such as climate change, population growth, employment issues in this field, and food safety. Today's agriculture system has reached at a different level due to AI. It has improved crop production and real-time monitoring, harvesting, processing and marketing. Different hi-tech computer-based systems are designed to determine various important parameters such as w**d detection, yield detection, crop quality, and many more. For agriculture, AI has become a revolutionary technology.

Some key applications of AI in the Agriculture sector: (1) weather & price forecasting, (2) health monitoring of crops, (3) agriculture robotics, (4) intelligent spraying, (5) disease diagnosis and (6) precision farming.

Benefits of AI in agriculture: (1) better decision-making, (2) cost savings, (3) reduction of labour shortage.

Challenges of AI in agriculture: (1) lack of familiarity with AI machines, (2) lack of experience with emerging technologies, (3) privacy and security issues.

ApiLAB: CENTRE OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES – THE HOUSE OF THE CARNIOLA BEE
(the Slovene indigenous species of honey bee - the Carniola lavender )

The purpose of the project (funded by ERDF) is to renovate the existing old school building (brownfield investment) into a modern center of innovative technologies, which will be intended for interaction of historical and cultural heritage of the Carniolan bee, high-tech innovative solutions and support for entrepreneurial initiatives in this area.
In addition, an innovative creative digital laboratory (ApiLab) with 3D technology will be set-up for supporting business initiatives to design products both in the field of virtualization of historical and cultural heritage in the field of beekeeping in Slovenia, as well as in the field of production and sale of honey & honey products in an innovative way. Its purpose will also be to empower both entrepreneurs (workshop part in a multifunctional space) and the community in co-creating the above mentioned solutions.
In terms of content, the center of innovative technologies will also be dedicated to interactive presentation of the history of the development of Slovenian beekeeping and to the transfer of knowledge in an interactive way, using technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, etc. which will affect not only the visualization of the historical elements, but also the increase in the digital competence of users, also through educational programs and workshops.

GREEN FERTILIZERS

Green fertilizers are nitrate-based mineral fertilizers with exactly the same chemical and physical composition as fertilizers produced with fossil fuels (natural gas, coal, oil), but with a much lower carbon footprint because they are produced with renewable electricity (hydro, wind, solar). That means green fertilizers are a fossil free, impactful and effortless way to decarbonize food production.
What are the benefits of green fertilizers?
Fossil free: Green fertilizers fossil free, enabling us to decarbonize the food system and reducing our dependency on fossil fuels.
Impactful: Green fertilizers will significantly lower the carbon footprint across the food value chain, from fertilizers to food.
Effortless: Green fertilizers are a simple way for farmers and food companies to reduce the carbon footprint of their crops and food products without needing to change their operations, agricultural practices or processes.

EC SUPPORT MEASURE TO EASE LOCAL FARMERS IN 5 EU MEMBER STATES

At the beginning of this month, the European Commission presented its proposal for a support measure for farmers worth €100 million to representatives of all Member States. This amount, taken from the agricultural reserve for 2023, will be directed to farmers producing cereals and oilseeds in these five frontline Member States - Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

The details of the Commission’s proposal were discussed with Member States’ representatives during an ad hoc committee meeting for the common organisation of agricultural markets and all Member States will vote on the proposal at the next committee meeting. If the measure is approved by Member States, the Commission will adopt it. Want to learn more?

WORLD BEE DAY

In 2014, the Beekeepers' Union of Slovenia took the initiative to make May 20 the World Bee Day. The initiative was supported by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, which actively strove for its implementation. After more than three years of efforts, on November 17, 2017, the UN Economic and Financial Committee adopted a resolution to declare World Bee Day (A/RES/72/211). The resolution was unanimously approved by the UN General Assembly in New York on December 20, 2017, thus declaring May 20 as World Bee Day. It was supported by all UN countries, and 115 countries were also co-sponsors, including the USA, Canada, China, Russia, India, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and all the countries of the European Union.

The goal of World Bee Day is to raise awareness among the global public about the importance and protection of bees and other pollinators. They are increasingly threatened and therefore need the protection of their natural environment, which will enable their continued survival. In addition to bee products, which are considered high-quality food, their biggest contribution is the pollination of almost three quarters of all plants. As much as a third of the world's food production depends on pollinators.

20 May coincides with the birthday of Anton Janša, who in the 18th century pioneered modern beekeeping techniques in his native Slovenia and praised the bees for their ability to work so hard, while needing so little attention.

The special features of Slovenian beekeeping compared to other countries are that Slovenia probably has the largest number of beekeepers per population and that it has a special, Slovenian form of beehive. And of course, Slovenia has an indigenous species of honey bee: the Carniola lavender.

The fact that UNESCO included Slovenian beekeeping in the list of world intangible cultural heritage shows how important bees and beekeeping are in Slovenia.

THE USE OF E – COMMERCE IN AGRICULTURE

Did you know that more and more farmers in Europe are using e-commerce to sell their products? According to a recent survey, over 60% of farmers in the European Union have used e-commerce to sell their products, with the highest rates found in countries like Denmark, Estonia, and the Netherlands. However, despite this growing trend, many farmers still face challenges in fully embracing digitalization. For example, only 15% of farmers in the EU have their own website, and even fewer have a social media presence. This highlights the need for more support and resources to help farmers navigate the digital landscape and take advantage of the opportunities offered by e-commerce. Nevertheless, the benefits of e-commerce for farmers are clear. By selling their products online, farmers can reach new customers, expand their market reach, and increase their sales. In addition, e-commerce can help to reduce waste by enabling farmers to sell their produce directly to consumers, rather than through intermediaries. As consumers, we can support these efforts by seeking out and purchasing products from local farmers who are embracing e-commerce and digitalization. Together, we can help to build a more sustainable and resilient food system for everyone.

INTERNET USE BY OCCUPATIONAL GROUPS 2013 - 2020
In the study of Internet Usage Rate by Occupational Groups covering the years 2013-2020 by the Turkish Statistical Institute, it is reported that internet usage has increased over the years in terms of all occupational groups, and this is already an expected situation. As of 2020, the rate of internet use is around 90% among managers, technicians, and auxiliary professional groups, office staff, service and sales staff, craftsmen and workers in related jobs, and machine operators. Internet usage among employees in jobs that do not require qualifications, which started the period with a rate of 48%, reached 84% as of 2020.
The group that stands out with the lowest internet usage in the relevant period is qualified agriculture, forestry and aquaculture workers. In the agricultural sector, this rate was 19% in 2013, with a very rapid increase, approaching only 58% in 2020. Compared to all other occupational groups, the relative lowness of internet use in qualified agricultural work is extremely striking. This is one of the biggest obstacles to digitalization and smart farming practices in agriculture.

VEGERILA - A SUCCESSFUL DIGITALISED SMALL ORGANIC FARM
Tilen Praprotnik, who runs the organic farm Vegerila (Lesce, Gorenjska), proves that digitization is worthwhile even for a small farm. On less than half a hectare, they have been growing more than 60 different crops for well-known customers for the fourth year. Through partnership farming (10%), they supply 30 households with weekly baskets of vegetables, and restaurants with 30 % of the produce.
Although they have a good two hectares of land, they only make a profit by intensively growing vegetables and herbs on 0.43 hectares. For the second year, they are converting to organic production; they have more than 60 types of crops under organic control, all of which will be certified organic soon. What they produce, they also sell. "Only 0.05 % of our farm's income comes from agricultural subsidies, 99.95 percent of our income comes from sales," emphasizes Praprotnik.
Although Tilen is neither a computer scientist nor an agronomist by education, he himself established a digital model of his farm.

They are not investing in agricultural machinery and equipment, but in digitalization, which ensures that the farm is very well organized.

"Digitalization allowed us to implement a very complex succession of crops and crop rotation, which would have been almost impossible without a digital model. Another benefit is crop optimization. It's also good that we can use the same or supplemented plan for several seasons. It offers us the possibility of planning and recording and analysing the season and relatively simple inclusion of the farm in ecological control." says Tilen Praprotnik
