In cooperation with the ARTEMIS (Erasmus+) project and the SEG Student Chapter Bratislava, we recently organized two expert events that connected academic knowledge with the real world of economic geology.

The first one was an expert lecture entitled “Active and Historical Ore Deposits in the Volcanic Rocks of Colorado, USA”, delivered by Prof. Peter Koděra and Jana Brčeková, PhD. The lecture presented field-based experience from a significant mining district, was accompanied by a presentation of the ARTEMIS (Erasmus+) project to students, and was followed by an expert discussion.

The second one was a short workshop led by RNDr. Jozef Hodermarský, focusing on the expectations of mining companies toward recent geology graduates and career opportunities in the field. This workshop also included an engaging discussion with students.

V spolupráci s projektom ARTEMIS (Erasmus+) a študentskou kapitolou SEG Bratislava sme nedávno zorganizovali dve odborné aktivity, ktoré prepojili akademické poznatky s reálnym svetom ekonomickej geológie.

Prvou aktivitou bola odborná prednáška s názvom „Aktívne a historické rudné ložiská vo vulkanických horninách Colorada, USA“, ktorú viedli prof. Peter Koděra a Jana Brčeková, PhD. Prednáška predstavila terénne skúsenosti z významného banského regiónu, bola doplnená prezentáciou projektu ARTEMIS (Erasmus+) pre študentov a nasledovala odborná diskusia.

Druhou aktivitou bol krátky workshop vedený RNDr. Jozefom Hodermarským, zameraný na očakávania banských spoločností voči čerstvým absolventom geológie a na kariérne možnosti v tomto odbore. Workshop zahŕňal aj podnetnú diskusiu so študentmi.

On the weekend of June 6–7, 2025, members of the SEG Student Chapter Bratislava had the pleasure of visiting our colleagues from the SEG Student Chapter Brno.

The program began on Friday with a visit to the mineralogical and paleontological collections of Masaryk University, as well as its geopark. Afterwards, we enjoyed a guided tour of the historic center of Brno, with a special focus on the geological aspects of the city’s building stones.

On Saturday, we explored the former Hády quarry, where we had the opportunity to study Devonian fossils and an impressive unconformity, followed by a visit to the Růženin quarry, known for its limestone extraction and interesting geological exposures.

We are very grateful to the Brno Student Chapter for their warm welcome and well-prepared program. This visit not only enriched our geological knowledge but also strengthened the friendly ties between our chapters. We look forward to future cooperation and joint activities.

In 2024, our student chapter, in collaboration with the SEG Student Chapter from Erlangen, Germany, organized a five-day field trip in Slovakia. The main focus was on both active and historical gold and silver mining sites, complemented by visits to ore exploration areas, industrial mineral operations, and other key geological localities.

The program started with a visit to the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Comenius University in Bratislava, followed by a comprehensive geological itinerary. Highlights included the All Saints mining museum adit and the Šobov silica quarry in the Banská Štiavnica region, the active perlite mine at Lehôtka pod Brehmi, and bentonite and zeolite deposits near Kremnica. Participants also explored the Rozália underground Au-Ag-base metal mine, the historic Glanzenberg and Špania Dolina mining districts, and unique sites such as the Ochtiná aragonite cave and the Rochovce Mo-W porphyry system. The trip concluded with visits to the Jelšava magnesite mine and the Magurka Sb-Au deposit.

We highly value the collaboration with our colleagues from Erlangen and look forward to further strengthening our partnership in the coming years.
