Forestry Horizon 2020 Responding together sucessfully to Horizon 2020 calls

The Faculty of Forestry in Zvolen is the experts’ link and superb window into the emerging science of

building complex adaptive forests and forest landscapes based on the study of the natural forests of the Carpathians
tackling uncertainties and risks of adaptive forest management under global change
integrated spatio-temporal decision-making systems coupled with indigenous models and virtual re

ality
ecological limits of vulnerable tree species on continetal and global scale (temperate and boreal zones)
analysis and processing the theoretical and practical knowledge of the sphere of felling, hauling and manufacturing Technologies, forestry mechanisation, ergonomics and work safety, complex biomass utilization
research into structure and ongoing processes in the Slovak primeval forests, development, verification and optimization of silvicultural models in the forest with various funktions respecting the changing climate, research into form and growth changeability of rare tree species

How does European beech s. maintains dominance across the full development cycle? Answer available at http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378112716312713

The productivity and water consumption of forests depend on stand leaf area, which may vary with tree age, forest structure, and environment. How forest management affects leaf area and whether production forests have different leaf areas than unmanaged natural forests, is not clear. We compared the...

On the testing ground: our Forest Ecosystem Analysis and Modelling team lead by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marek Fabrika, head of the Department of Forest Management and Geodesy, uses state-of-the-art technologies enabling them to collect and process high quality data from our University Forestry Enterprise. That in turn allows for instantaneous knowledge transfer into progressive forestry practices: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8px14M-SmcM

May phylogenetic origin of Abies alba, the "dame of our forests", have affected the species' growth in Europe? Using a massive dendrochronological and genetic material, authors led by Dr. M. Bošeľa from our Forest Ecosystems Analysis and Modelling team revealed the distinct growth and climate sensitivity between the populations originating from Balkan and Apennien refugia. These findings indicate the importance of different post-glacial histories for the growth sensitivity and adaptability to varying environmental factors. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/…/10.11…/1365-2745.12561/full

Ready to know truth? New generation forest growth model and software SIBYLA Triquetra is being finalized by our Forest Management and Geodesy departmental team. It will be optimized for 64-bit platforms and will contain lots of new features allowing users to face new challenges in the adaptive forest management. More information can be found at sibyla.tuzvo.sk

This is a matter of life & death :-D Members of our Forest Ecosystem Analysis and Modelling team derived a unique new equation capturing the growth of living organisms as determined by moments their of birth and demise. Properties and prediction accuracy of a sigmoid function of time-determinate growth. iForest-Biogeosciences and Forestry, 8(5), 631. http://www.sisef.it/iforest/contents/?id=ifor1243-007

Abstract: The properties and short-term prediction accuracy of mathematical model of sigmoid time-determinate growth, denoted as “KM-function”, are presented. Comparative mathematical analysis of the function revealed that it is a model of asymmetrical sigmoid growth, which starts at zero size of an…
