The Story of RIS Investment Firm

Part 3 – Structure, Impact, and Legacy

As the vision of RIS Investment Firm became clearer among its members, the next step was to transform ideas into structure and action. What had once been informal conversations among friends now required organization, leadership, and clear direction.

The members understood that if RIS was to grow into a meaningful platform, it needed defined roles, responsibilities, and leadership. From this realization emerged the first leadership structure of RIS Investment Firm.

Individuals within the group naturally stepped forward to guide different aspects of the organization. Some focused on coordination and planning meetings, others worked on ideas for youth empowerment programs, while others began thinking about how RIS could expand its influence beyond the internal circle of members.

This early leadership culture was built on collective responsibility rather than hierarchy. Every member had a role to play, and every voice mattered. The organization functioned as a network where ideas were shared openly and decisions were made with the spirit of unity.

The guiding philosophy remained unchanged:

“Be Your Brother’s Keeper.”

With a stronger structure in place, RIS Investment Firm began shifting its attention toward creating real impact beyond the group itself.

During their discussions about Sierra Leone’s development, one sector repeatedly emerged as a critical area of opportunity: agriculture.

Agriculture had always been central to the country’s economy, yet many young people were hesitant to pursue it. Members of RIS believed that this perception needed to change. They saw agriculture not simply as farming but as a business ecosystem full of possibilities for innovation, investment, and entrepreneurship.

This realization led to one of the most significant initiatives in the history of RIS Investment Firm — the creation of the Youthful Harvest Seminar.

The seminar was designed as an educational platform where young people, students, and aspiring entrepreneurs could learn about the intersection of agriculture, technology, leadership, and business.

The event brought together speakers from different professional backgrounds who shared knowledge and inspiration with participants. Topics discussed included:

Agropreneurship and agricultural business opportunities

Skills development for young entrepreneurs

Leadership and management in business

Agrotechnology development in Sierra Leone

The role of Artificial Intelligence in the agricultural industry

Synergizing civil engineering with agriculture for sustainable development

Farm accounting and agricultural record keeping

Policy frameworks for agricultural investment

The seminar represented more than a learning event. It was a demonstration of what RIS Investment Firm stood for: empowering young people with knowledge and encouraging them to see opportunities where others see challenges.

To complement the educational discussions, RIS also introduced practical initiatives such as the Backyard Green Ventures Workshop. Through this program, participants were given seeds and trained on how to start small backyard gardens, learning the fundamentals of cultivation and farm management.

The idea behind the workshop was simple but powerful — agriculture should not remain theoretical. Young people should experience it firsthand and see its potential as a viable economic activity.

As RIS continued organizing programs and initiatives, its efforts began gaining recognition.

In a significant milestone, RIS Investment Firm was officially registered with the National Youth Commission of Sierra Leone as a Youth Serving Agency, in accordance with the National Youth Commission Act No. 11 of 2009.

This recognition formally acknowledged RIS as an organization committed to youth empowerment, leadership development, and national progress.

By this time, the members who once formed the Brotherhood had reached another important stage in their journey.

Many had successfully completed their university education, fulfilling the very mission that had originally brought them together — supporting one another academically and professionally.

Today, approximately 98 percent of RIS members have graduated and are contributing to different sectors of society, including science, engineering, business, technology, public service, and entrepreneurship.

For the founders and members, this achievement stands as one of the greatest successes of RIS Investment Firm.

However, as members entered the professional world, their schedules and responsibilities grew. Activities within the organization gradually slowed as individuals focused on building their careers.

But even during this quieter period, the essence of RIS remained alive.

The relationships built through years of friendship, shared struggles, and collective ambition could not be erased by time or distance.

Recently, a new wave of reflection began among the members. Conversations started again about the importance of reviving the network that had once played such an important role in their lives.

The idea of a Reunion Iftar during the holy month of Ramadan emerged as a meaningful opportunity for members to reconnect. The gathering would not only be a moment of fellowship but also a platform to discuss the future direction and revival of RIS Investment Firm.

The meeting would allow members to reflect on their journey, celebrate their achievements, and explore new ways the network could continue supporting one another and contributing to society.

Five years after its creation, RIS Investment Firm stands as proof that a simple friendship can grow into something powerful.

From the Backbenchers Association at Prince of Wales School…

To The Brotherhood of university friends…

To RIS Investment Firm, a youth-driven platform for empowerment and investment…

The journey of RIS reflects the power of unity, vision, and shared purpose.

And as members prepare to write the next chapter of this story, one principle continues to guide them — the same principle that has defined RIS from the beginning:

Be Your Brother’s Keeper.

The story of RIS Investment Firm is still unfolding.

And the future may hold even greater possibilities.

The Story of RIS Investment Firm

Part 2 – From Brotherhood to Vision

After the idea of The Brotherhood was introduced, the group of friends began to realize that their bond was something rare. Many friendships from secondary school fade with time, especially when people move in different directions in life. But for this group, the opposite happened — the more life separated them physically, the stronger their connection became.

Those who had gained admission into universities experienced a new environment filled with opportunities, pressure, and responsibility. At the same time, those preparing to retake their WASSCE examinations remained determined to achieve the same goal. Instead of allowing these different circumstances to divide them, the group decided to use the Brotherhood as a platform for encouragement, mentorship, and accountability.

Regular meetings became part of their culture. These meetings were not always formal at the beginning. Sometimes they were simply gatherings where members discussed their academic progress, shared life experiences, and motivated one another to stay focused on their goals.

But as the gatherings continued, something important began to happen.

The conversations started evolving.

Members began talking about the future of Sierra Leone, about the challenges facing young people, and about the importance of preparing themselves not only for employment but for leadership and investment.

Many members came from academic disciplines that required critical thinking — physics, engineering, statistics, political science, and other analytical fields. These backgrounds influenced the nature of their discussions. They began thinking strategically about how a group of determined young people could build something meaningful together.

It was during this stage that the Brotherhood began to move beyond friendship into purpose.

One of the ideas that emerged from their discussions was the importance of developing a professional identity. The members realized that if they wanted their network to grow and have real impact, it needed structure, vision, and a name that reflected seriousness and ambition.

That moment marked the beginning of a transformation.

The Brotherhood began transitioning into something larger — an organized network that could represent the collective aspirations of its members.

From this transformation emerged the name RIS Investment Firm.

The choice of the word “Firm” was deliberate. It represented discipline, professionalism, and a mindset of building something solid and lasting. It also reflected the idea that members should begin to think like investors, entrepreneurs, and leaders rather than simply students.

However, even with this new identity, the core spirit of the Brotherhood remained intact.

The values that had shaped the group from the beginning continued to guide the organization:

loyalty, unity, support, and collective progress.

The motto that captured this philosophy was formally embraced:

“Be Your Brother’s Keeper.”

This phrase became more than just a slogan. It became a moral commitment among members. It meant that each member had a responsibility not only for their own success but also for the well-being and progress of others in the network.

With the new identity of RIS Investment Firm, meetings became more organized. Discussions began focusing on specific themes such as:

leadership development

entrepreneurship

investment opportunities

agriculture and national development

academic success and career planning

Members began to see themselves as part of a future professional network, not just a group of friends.

The organization also started building a sense of identity through symbols and branding. The RIS logo was created, featuring a star above the name RIS, representing excellence and aspiration. The oval shape around the name symbolized unity and collective strength.

These symbols reflected the belief that the organization was not only about the present but about the future potential of its members.

As time passed, RIS Investment Firm gradually expanded its ambitions. Members began thinking about how their network could contribute to society, particularly in areas that offered opportunities for youth empowerment and economic growth.

One sector stood out clearly: agriculture.

Agriculture has always been one of the most important sectors in Sierra Leone, yet many young people had traditionally avoided it, often seeing it as outdated or unprofitable.

RIS members began challenging that mindset.

They believed that with education, innovation, and entrepreneurship, agriculture could become a powerful engine for youth development. This belief led to discussions about promoting agropreneurship — the idea of treating agriculture as a business and investment opportunity.

From these discussions emerged new initiatives, including educational seminars and workshops designed to inspire young people to explore agriculture and entrepreneurship.

The organization’s programs gradually began attracting attention beyond the immediate circle of members. Professionals, entrepreneurs, and development practitioners were invited to share their knowledge and experiences with participants.

These engagements strengthened the reputation of RIS Investment Firm as a youth-driven platform focused on knowledge sharing, empowerment, and innovation.

But perhaps the greatest achievement of RIS during this period was the transformation of its members themselves.

The same group of friends who once sat together in the back benches of Prince of Wales School had now grown into university graduates, professionals, engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs.

The Brotherhood had accomplished one of its earliest missions — to ensure that members succeeded academically and moved forward in their careers.

Yet the journey of RIS Investment Firm was far from complete.

As members entered the professional world, the organization faced a new challenge: how to maintain the same level of unity and activity while members pursued careers in different sectors and locations.

For a time, activities slowed down. But the spirit of RIS never disappeared.

The bonds created through years of friendship, struggle, and shared ambition remained strong.

Today, as members reconnect and discuss the revival of the organization, they are not simply restarting an old group.

They are continuing a story that began many years ago — a story of friendship, resilience, and the belief that when young people stand together, they can build something extraordinary.

And the next chapter of RIS Investment Firm is now waiting to be written.

The Story of RIS Investment Firm Part 1

From Brotherhood to Investment Firm

“Be Your Brother’s Keeper”

Long before the name RIS Investment Firm existed, there was a simple but powerful bond between a group of young friends.

The story begins at Prince of Wales School in Freetown, one of Sierra Leone’s historic institutions known for producing some of the country’s brightest minds. Among the students were a group of young men who shared more than just classrooms — they shared ambition, loyalty, and a vision for the future.

As early as 2012, many of them had formed friendships that would later become the foundation of something greater. Within the school environment, this group of friends began referring to themselves as the Backbenchers Association.

The name was informal and playful, but the individuals behind it were anything but ordinary. They were known among their peers as brilliant, hardworking, intelligent, and determined young people. At the same time, they maintained a strong spirit of friendship and humor. They were serious about their goals but never lost their sense of brotherhood and fun.

The Backbenchers Association was more than just a nickname. It represented a circle of friends who constantly supported one another academically, socially, and personally.

Over time, more friends joined the circle, especially between 2016 and 2017 during their final secondary school years. The group grew stronger as members prepared for one of the most important academic milestones in Sierra Leone — the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

When the examination results were released, life began to take different paths for members of the group. Some were fortunate enough to gain immediate admission into universities, while others had to retake the examinations in order to meet university entry requirements.

Despite these differences in circumstances, the bond among the friends did not weaken. Instead, it became even more meaningful.

Those who entered university faced new challenges and opportunities, while those preparing to retake exams continued their journey with determination. Yet they all remained connected by a shared understanding: no one would be left behind.

It was during this period that the idea of creating a more structured network began to emerge.

The friends realized that their bond was something valuable — something worth preserving beyond school days. They wanted to maintain their connection, support one another through university life, and continue building a network that could help them grow academically and professionally.

From this vision, the idea of “The Brotherhood” was born.

The Brotherhood was initially created as a simple platform where members could meet regularly, share ideas, encourage one another, and maintain the bond that had begun during their secondary school years.

Meetings were organized so members could gather, talk about their academic journeys, discuss life challenges, and simply enjoy each other’s company. The goal was not only serious discussion but also maintaining friendship, trust, and unity among the group.

It was a safe space for young men who believed in supporting each other through the early stages of adulthood.

The Brotherhood also became a place where members could motivate one another to succeed, especially those who were still working hard to secure university admission.

The philosophy that guided these meetings was simple: everyone should rise together.

As the meetings continued, members began to realize that the Brotherhood had the potential to become something bigger than a social circle. The conversations gradually expanded from friendship to topics such as:

education

leadership

entrepreneurship

investment

national development

The group began to think about how their collective intelligence and ambition could be used to create opportunities not only for themselves but also for others.

This realization led to an important turning point.

Members decided to transform the Brotherhood into a more structured and purposeful organization. The goal was to maintain the spirit of unity while expanding into areas such as investment, entrepreneurship, and youth development.

From this transformation emerged the name RIS Investment Firm.

The word “Firm” symbolized professionalism, structure, and seriousness of purpose. The organization was no longer just a brotherhood of friends — it had evolved into a network of young thinkers preparing themselves for leadership and investment.

Yet despite the new name and broader vision, the organization never abandoned its original philosophy.

The motto adopted by the members captured the spirit that had always defined them:

“Be Your Brother’s Keeper.”

This principle continued to guide the culture of RIS Investment Firm. Members supported each other academically, celebrated each other’s successes, and encouraged one another to pursue excellence in their careers.

Over time, the organization expanded its activities into youth empowerment and agricultural investment, recognizing agriculture as one of the most important sectors for Sierra Leone’s economic development.

RIS Investment Firm organized educational seminars such as the Youthful Harvest Seminar, where professionals and experts spoke to young people about entrepreneurship, leadership, agropreneurship, and innovation in agriculture.

The organization also conducted practical initiatives like the Backyard Green Ventures Workshop, which encouraged participants to begin small-scale farming and understand the economic potential of agriculture.

These programs demonstrated that RIS was committed not only to discussion but also to practical action and youth empowerment.

Eventually, the organization reached another milestone when it was officially registered with the National Youth Commission of Sierra Leone as a Youth Serving Agency, under the National Youth Commission Act No. 11 of 2009.

This recognition affirmed RIS Investment Firm’s commitment to supporting the development of young people across Sierra Leone.

Today, several years after its formation, RIS Investment Firm reflects on a remarkable journey.

Many of its members have successfully completed their university education and have begun building careers in fields such as science, engineering, technology, statistics, and public service.

In fact, approximately 98 percent of the members have graduated, fulfilling one of the earliest goals of the Brotherhood — to help each other succeed academically.

Yet the most powerful achievement of RIS Investment Firm is not simply the degrees its members earned.

It is the brotherhood that endured through every stage of their journey.

From a group of high school friends sitting in the back benches of Prince of Wales School…

To a brotherhood determined to support one another…

To a youth investment network committed to empowerment and development…

The story of RIS Investment Firm is a testament to the power of unity.

And as members gather again today to discuss the revival of the organization, the spirit that started it all remains alive.

Because at its core, RIS Investment Firm has always been about one thing:

brotherhood, responsibility, and collective progress.

And the words that have guided the organization from the beginning still echo today:

Be Your Brother’s Keeper.
