From Sierra Leone to India: Mr. Ishmail Lahai’s Spine Treatment Journey at Fortis Mulund
Mr. Ishmail Lahai, a 39-year-old man from Sierra Leone, had been living with back pain for around three years. He wanted to find the right treatment and understand what could be done to improve his condition.
His journey with Vaidam began when he attended a medical camp organised by Vaidam in Freetown. At the camp, he spoke with the Vaidam team and learned that he could explore specialised treatment options in India. The team discussed his medical condition with him and explained how Vaidam could support him throughout his treatment journey.
After understanding his treatment options, Mr. Ishmail decided to travel to Mumbai, India, for his treatment. Before his journey, the Vaidam team supported him with all the important arrangements, including understanding the treatment process, visa assistance, sharing his medical records with the hospital, coordinating with the doctor, scheduling his consultation, planning his treatment, and arranging his medical travel. The team also remained in regular communication with him, helping him understand each step and prepare for his journey to India.
Mr. Ishmail travelled to Mumbai with his friend, Mr. Aiah Sorie, who accompanied him throughout his stay.
After arriving in Mumbai, Mr. Ishmail consulted Dr. Jayesh Sardhara, Neurosurgeon at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. Following his evaluation, he was diagnosed with L4-L5 disc prolapse. In simple terms, a disc in the lower part of his back had developed a problem, causing his back pain.
After assessing his condition, Dr. Jayesh Sardhara recommended an endoscopic lumbar discectomy. This is a minimally invasive procedure in which the surgeon removes the part of the affected disc that is causing the problem.
Mr. Ishmail underwent L4-L5 endoscopic discectomy on 17 August 2026 at Fortis Hospital, Mulund.
Following the procedure, Mr. Ishmail had a good post-operative recovery. He received the necessary medicines, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and post-operative care. His symptoms improved significantly after treatment, and he was discharged with oral medications and the required follow-up advice.
During his 15-day stay in India, the Vaidam team continued to support Mr. Ishmail and his friend throughout their medical journey. The team assisted with accommodation, food arrangements, local transportation, communication, treatment-related arrangements, and guidance during his recovery. Whenever they needed assistance or had questions, the Vaidam team remained available to guide and support them throughout their stay, helping make their treatment journey as smooth and comfortable as possible.

After completing his treatment and receiving postoperative care, Mr. Ishmail completed his medical journey in India. His experience shows how patients travelling from abroad can receive guidance and coordination at different stages of their treatment journey.
