📌Analyzing Shocks in Somalia: Beyond Climate Concerns🔦

Recent data from the Somalia Integrated Household Budget Survey (SIHBS) 2022 highlights a critical issue facing the Somali people. According to the treemap, account for 40.6% of the total shocks experienced, closely followed by at 37.2%. The data also reveals that— or severe water shortage at 35% and Large rise in at 36%—collectively account for 71% of all shocks. This underscores that economic and environmental shocks are significantly affecting the daily lives of Somali communities.

The absence of local production, combined with a highly dollarized economy lacking its own currency, worsens the effects of inflation.

The substantial increase in food prices is directly linked to the country's massive import bills and the scarcity of local production. This dependency makes us vulnerable to global market fluctuations, diminishing the purchasing power of households.

Moreover, the prices of local essential goods might rise from, for example, $1 to $1.50 or $2, due to the dollarized and digitalized economy, and this is an immediate 50% to 100% surge in prices. It is hard to encounter prices between $1 and $1.50. This volatile pricing pattern complicates household budget management, leading to heightened financial stress and uncertainty.

Official statistics may report moderate inflation rates, but the lived experiences of Somali citizens tell a different story. The stark discrepancy between and inflation underscores the pressing need for robust monetary policies. Implementing strategic measures, including the issuance of new currency to stabilize prices and restore economic confidence, is essential in the short term.

🔝Addressing inflation through effective monetary policies is not just necessary—it is urgent. By prioritizing economic stability, we can establish a resilient foundation for all to thrive.

Life expectancy has significantly increased worldwide, and East African countries are no exception. By 2020, countries like Kenya and Tanzania surpassed 60 years in life expectancy. Somalia, while making sluggish progress, still lags behind its neighbors. The country’s life expectancy rose to nearly 55 years, but further investment is needed to close the gap and ensure continued gains in health and well-being for all people.

The firm provides a variety of consultancy services on social and development issues. This includes Baseline and End-Line Surveys, Research, Evaluation, & Monitoring (REM), capacity building & skills development, translation and interpretation, and media, communications & public relations.



Sammo is seeking Pre-qualified Enumerators (40 Enumerators) for the research activities in Somalia. The Pre-qualified Enumerators will participate in all activities to be carried out by Sammo and all partnerships with stakeholders. The Pre-qualified Enumerator shall carry out data collection activities during implementation and surveys as follow; Baseline survey, KAP survey, End line survey, and Research studies. The Pre-qualified Enumerator shall perform data entry activities and any other duties assigned by the Team Leader. The position is a short-term contract based on a need-for-work basis and is not a full-time role. The roles may require frequent travel and days spent in the field.



The enumerator will be responsible for the following:
• Assist the research officer in collecting data as per the program/project requirements.
• Seek out respondents who fit the suggested profiles in assigned locations and collect data based on questionnaires developed and supplied by the program.
• Gather and accurately record responses on questionnaires provided by the research team
• Ensure that questionnaires have been thoroughly checked and completed.
• Submit completed questionnaires and other equipment used in fieldwork to the research team
• Participate in briefings, and carry out data collection, data entry, and/or reporting.
• Recognize and give an account of problems in obtaining data and provide useful feedback from field research activities


The enumerator should have the following experience and qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in social science, public policy, or related fields.
• 2 to 3 years of field research experience
• Previous experience in data collection, administering questionnaires and conducting interviews, data collection, and data entry;
• Experience with mobile data collection platforms like SurveyCTO, OKD, etc
• Experience with local governments, authorities, and communities;
• Willingness to learn and explore new experiences;
• Fluency in speaking and understanding English and Somali languages.
