Studies show that lottery is gambling and gambling is foolish...

For some folks, that's true, but for others, often those with the least amount of money to spare, playing for these jackpots can be a serious income drainer. An overwhelming amount of lottery participants seem to reside in the lower economic classes, according to the stats. In California, a study found that 40% of those who played the lottery were unemployed; in Maryland, the poorest one-third of its population buys 60% of all lottery tickets; and in Michigan, people without a high school diploma spent five times more on the lottery than those with a college education. Small wonder that consumer-finance gurus say the lottery is essentially an extra tax on the poor.

Concurrentieanalyse Vergelijkbare Opleidingen in Suriname
De Walden University SR maakt internationaal geaccrediteerde opleidingen in Accounting en Financiën toegankelijk in Suriname. Daarvoor is eveneens de Global Accounting & Finance Experts Network (GAFEN) opgericht. GAFEN biedt de meeste en grootste voordelen aan accountancy studenten. Een van de grootste voordelen is de kortste route tot de hoogste opleiding, in samenwerking met werelds grootste vakorganisatie voor accountants, de ACCA. In tabel 4 worden enkele grote verschillen tussen GAFEN en doorgaans overige Accountancy opleidingen in Suriname nader toegelicht.

1 Student behaald slechts een certificaat of masters’ graad in Accounting & financiën, maar geen titel als onafhankelijke accountant en mag daardoor slechts geselecteerde diensten verrichten in de administratie onder toezicht van een gecertificeerde accountant. GAFEN student behaald zowel een Bachelors’ graad, een masters’ graad en een internationale titel en diploma in Accounting & financiën en kan als gecertificeerde onafhankelijke accountant daardoor ook zelfstandig attestatie diensten verrichten.
2 De normen voor de opleiding worden lokaal vastgesteld door de samenwerkende scholen en/of leerkrachten in Suriname. De normen voor de GAFEN opleiding worden internationaal vastgesteld door de hoogste vakorganisatie.
3 Studenten in Suriname krijgen overigens een lokale diploma dat verschilt van het internationale. Doordat niet de hoogste vakverenigingen achter de diploma’s staan, hebben studenten doorgaans weinig internationale carrièremogelijkheden. Studenten in Suriname krijgen een internationale diploma; dezelfde diploma als kandidaten die in het buitenland zijn afgestudeerd. De diploma’s worden door de hoofdorganisaties in Europa en de USA afgegeven waardoor GAFEN afgestudeerden dezelfde internationale erkenning krijgen als studenten die in het buitenland zijn afgestudeerd.
4 De opleidingen worden doorgaans in het Nederlands verzorgt. Zowel studenten als docenten hebben matig of slechte vaardigheid in Engels. Echter is Nederlands geen internationale taal voor Accounting & Financiën. GAFEN-opleidingen worden in het Engels verzorgt. Studenten worden geleerd hoe deskundig te communiceren in het Engels. Hierdoor zijn afgestudeerden vaardig in Engels, de internationale taal voor Accounting & Financiën.
5 Afgestudeerden zijn geen lid van de internationale vakvereniging in accounting & financiën; en hebben weinig of geen vastgestelde normen voor voortdurende verbetering van hun vaardigheden en carrièremogelijkheden. GAFEN Afgestudeerden zijn aangesloten aan de internationale vakvereniging en blijven gedurende hun loopbaan ondersteuning krijgen voor steeds betere carrièremogelijkheden.
6 Langer studeren zonder een professionele diploma te behalen, met meer kosten. Eerder afstuderen met een professionele diploma, met minder kosten.
7 Geen accreditatie van de International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) Wel accreditatie van de International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). IFAC is wereldwijd gerenommeerd als het accreditatie orgaan voor de accountancy.. ACCA is lid van de IFAC.

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH THE FIA/CAT
PROGRAMME
Registerwith GAFEN
Registering with GAFEN gives you access to tuition, study
materials, exam preparation and revision along with great student support. Our friendly Customer Service Representatives wilt assist you in completing our tuition registration form, receive your payment and answer any questions you may have.

Reqister with ACCA
You will be required to register with the ACCA to become a student of that body. This must be done before you can write any of the examinations and the processing of your registration will take approximately 2 months to complete.You are therefore advised to register as early as possible to prevent any delay in writing your exams at the end of your course(s).

To complete the registration with theACCA, you are required to complete the registration form and submit:
• a passport size photograph .
• a copy of your birth certificate
• a copy of your marriage certificate or deed poll in case of name change
• an active email address
• applicable registration fees

Book and Write Exams
At the end of your course(s) you will then make payment for your exams, whether it's PBE or CBE. PBEs have fixed dates in June and December of each year, however, you will also I need to book a date when you want to write the CBEs.

. FOUNDATIOHS IN PROFESSIONALISM AND

ACCA requires that you complete an online module called Foundations in Professionalism so that you understand what it means to work and act professionally and ethically in a workplace. This is to be completed only once and can be done at anytime but you must finish it before you are granted the
certificate for the first qualification you are studying for. You don't need to do it for any qualifications thereafter.

ln order to become a CertifiedAccounting Technician, you must pass all nine of the FIA papers and must have 12 months supervised relevant work experience. This experience can be before you started studying, while you are studying or after you’ve completed your studies.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO COMPLETE THE FIA/CAT PROGRAMME
As shown on the preceding table, the entire suite of
qualifications can be comfortably achieved with two (2)years.There is no time limit within which to complete all the papers so you can structure your studies around your family and work commitments and become qualified at your own pace. However, we advise that you endeavour to complete the courses in a quick succession as the various subject matters will be fresh in your memory.

. ABOUT THE EXAMINATION
The first three levels of the FIA(or the first seven papers) can be done either as Paper Based Examinations (PBE) or as Computer Based Examinations {CBE}.

The PBEs are done twice annually in the months of June and December and are administered by theExams Division of the Ministry of Education. The results for these exams become available in approximately two months.The CBEs can be done at any time at GAFEN's CBE Centre that is approved and licensed by the ACCA.
The pass mark for either format of these examinations is 50%.
