Shift and Rise
At one time, Siemens was a vibrant mobile phone manufacturer, with low cost phones for the middle class. It dominated the market for a while, but it failed to stay in the phone industry long enough.
However, Siemens did not just fold its tail and disappear, they focused on another form of business; manufacturing machinery and instruments for Industry, Energy, Healthcare, and Infrastructure & Cities, as of today,
Siemens is one of the greatest suppliers of transmission equipment, power generation equipment and a lot of other specialised machinery used in industry with a market cap value of 142.01 billion Euro as of June 2024.
Similarly, Motorola, the brand which invented the first handheld mobile phone, brought us the iconic “Motorola brick”, and gave us both the first flip phone and the iconic Razor.
However, they disappeared from the market after other players came into the industry. Disappear, didn't mean they went to sleep. No.
After rebranding as Motorola Solutions, they diversified into wireless network equipment like cellular transmission base stations and signal amplifiers, and broadcast network products such as set-top boxes and digital video recorders. They have since become a prominent player in these sectors, currently valued at approximately $64.38 billion as of June 2024.
As if this is not enough. Am sure you can remember that Philips was once a leader in domestic electrical appliances. If any appliance wasn’t Philips, then it wasn’t strong.
When faced with a saturated market dominated by LG, Samsung, and Chinese brands, the tech giant chose to exit the consumer electronics sector. Instead, it focused on its lucrative appliances and healthcare divisions. This strategic shift paid off, making it a leader in medical equipment such as MRI scanners and X-ray machines and other medical equipment.
You see, sometimes when you struggle too much at one level, doing the same thing over and over again, you need to come to a point of realisation that,
"..this may not be the thing for me."
You may need to let go of the things in which you are struggling and concentrate more on other areas where you can shine.
We get too romantically attached to our dreams and pursuits, such that we don't know when to let go and try something else.
Your relationship with your career may not be forever. If it’s not working, let go and get into something else.
Also, the fact that you can be beaten at one game, doesn’t mean you will be beaten at everything. Instead of fighting in a game that you know you will surely lose, let go and get into another game.
