We finalized the distribution of climate resilient seeds and tools intended to support group farmers under the Community Driven Rural Development (CDRD) Project Funded by EU in South Sudan through SNV in Imurok Payam of Torit County. Rainfall remained a countrywide challenge however, there is still great hope farmers will plant and harvest. Next is capacity building and technical support for the varieties of Climate smart crop seeds provided.

This year’s dry spell is something not limited to a region but stretches across Africa and it’s impact would be catastrophic as crop yield in the first season has been seriously affected and there is likelihood that the second season would even be worst to the first season given that fact that it’s already 1 month plus that no rain has been experienced across East Africa and beyond. The biggest question is what mitigation measures are in place for farmers to salvage from their spoils? The field below is of our bean seeds planted early last month and now approaching flowering stage without sufficient rainfall to support flowering and grain fillings. For countries along the Nile River, it’s the right time the water resource from the Nile is put into the right purpose to support crop and livestock production because dependence on rain fed agriculture will worsen the current state of food insecurity.

Our team under the stewardship of Oling Calvin Ottoviano had a successful distribution of Assorted seeds and tools to smallholders farmers in Torit County through support from our partner SNV and the exercise will continue for the next three days until all the targeted farmers get their seeds. We gratefully appreciate this model of partnership as it gives seed companies and farmers a win-win balance promoting farming as a business. We through this partnership will build a sustainable seed sector and ensure continuous access to cheap quality seeds to all farmers and sustainable agribusiness among the actors along the value chain.

One of the biggest challenge to smallholders farmers is access to market for their produce, Nile Agro-Tech & Seed Co Ltd through the “Grow to Sell” agribusiness model engaged numerous farmers in seed multiplication program that is paying off to our seed outgrower farmers in Magwi. The farmers have been lacking this important agribusiness component for a very long time. As a seed company led by young vibrant South Sudanese we are proud of this milestone and we look forward to expanding our network and model to ensure every farmer have cash 💰 💵 at hand to meet their daily basic essential needs. We are appealing to development partners to support such initiatives and life changing models to ensure food and economic security in South Sudan.
