Ship structures often experience breakage in the midship area due to a combination of structural stress and dynamic loading conditions. This area witnesses the maximum bending moments as it is the midpoint of the structure's length. When the ship encounters waves, especially when a wave crest or trough is positioned midship, the bending stress on the ship's structure is at its highest.

Additionally, the distribution of cargo and ballast significantly affects the stress on the structure. Improper loading of the ship can lead to an uneven weight distribution, increasing the bending moment at the midship. Over time, this stress can lead to fatigue and eventual structural failure.

Another contributing factor is the quality of the materials used and the ship's design. If the materials are of low quality or if there are design flaws, the structure becomes more susceptible to cracking and breaking under stress. Regular inspections and maintenance are crucial to detect and repair any potential weaknesses before they lead to catastrophic failure.

This phenomenon has been observed in incidents such as the MOL Comfort disaster, where poor loading and design led to the ship breaking in half.
