Incomati and Maputo Watercourse Commission

Following the Technical Alignment Workshop on the GEF 8 IncoMaputo Component 4 demonstration projects, the Joint River Basin Authorities-project BoardJ, under the Lomati River Basin Authority, together with INMACOM, Global Water Partnership, the Project Management Unit, conducted a site visit to communities in the Lomati River Basin.

The visit provided a firsthand look at how the Lomati Farmwise Smart Agriculture Project is advancing water use efficiency, food security, livelihoods, and ecological diversity:

•At Mawelawela Dip Tank, participants observed land degradation and soil erosion, hearing directly from community members about restoration efforts and ongoing challenges.
•At Mkhovu 1, the team assessed deterioration of a water delivery canal, underscoring the importance of maintaining infrastructure for reliable water use.
•At Bambanani Farmers Association, proposed solar powered pumping and drip irrigation showcased how practical technology can strengthen local food production.
•At Gauging Station 34 (GS34), participants engaged with the water quality monitoring programme, which builds evidence for informed water resource management.
•At Tentele Make Farmers Association, planned interventions include solar pumping, drip irrigation, and measures to protect endangered plant species.

These field realities reinforce a vital principle of Integrated Water Resources Management: institutions may design the plans, but communities live with the outcomes.

Funded by the Global Environment Facility, implemented by UNDP Eswatini, and executed by Global Water Partnership Southern Africa, the project supports basin-wide planning, climate and disaster risk preparedness, improved data and information systems, and source-to-sea management approaches that enhance water security, ecosystem resilience, and sustainable development.

INMACOM is convening a five-day Technical Alignment Workshop with the Joint River Basin Authorities-project Boardt , focusing on two critical demonstration projects under Component 4 of the GEF 8 IncoMaputo Project: Mpakeni Dam Sustainable Utilization Plan; Lomati Farmwise Smart Agriculture Project

Component 4 projects deliver practical, sustainable solutions that balance environmental protection with community needs across Eswatini’s shared basins. They combine practical solutions with long term sustainability, addressing both environmental and community needs.

Specifically, these interventions advance:

• Sustainable land and water use planning
• Water efficient agriculture and solar pumping
• Rehabilitation of water delivery infrastructure
• Biodiversity conservation and invasive alien plant control
• Restoration of degraded areas
• Aquatic ecosystem monitoring
• Institutional capacity development

The Workshop has been structured to strengthen collaboration and ensure compliance across all partners. It is designed to provide JRBA with a comprehensive onboarding, align project implementation with GEF, UNDP, GWPSA, and INMACOM requirements, and ground planning in real field conditions.

Specifically, the workshop will:
•Orient JRBA on fiduciary, procurement, safeguards, reporting, and quality assurance requirements.
•Review pilot interventions to assess scope, readiness, and opportunities for improved sequencing.
•Conduct a structured field visit to ground planning in actual implementation realities.
•Validate the Joint Work Plan

Expected Outputs:
•Field informed implementation assessment
•Shared implementation understanding
•Budget aligned revised JWP
•Delivery acceleration plan

INMACOM Executive Secretary Sindy Mthimkhulu in her opening remarks said, this programme bridges momentum with alignment ensuring compliance, clarity, and collective ownership of Eswatini’s pilot interventions.

We are proud to be participating in the 61st Edition of the Maputo International Trade Fair (FACIM 2026), Mozambique's premier platform for business, innovation, investment, and regional collaboration.

We were honoured to receive visits to our exhibition stand from His Excellency Daniel Francisco Chapo, President of the Republic of Mozambique, and His Excellency Fernando Rafael, Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, who were briefed on INMACOM's mandate and ongoing efforts to promote sustainable and cooperative management of shared water resources across the Incomati and Maputo River Basins.

At FACIM 2026, INMACOM is showcasing key initiatives that are strengthening water security, climate resilience, ecosystem protection, and transboundary water governance in the region, including:
·The VUNWE Integrated Programme (2026-2029), which strengthens transboundary water cooperation, institutional capacity, and basin-wide planning for sustainable water resources management.
·The UNDP Eswatini/GEF-8 INMACOM Project, funded through the Global Environment Facility and implemented by UNDP Eswatini with ex*****on support from the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa. The project supports INMACOM and its Member States, Eswatini, Mozambique, and South Africa, in enhancing basin-wide planning, data and information systems, climate and disaster risk preparedness, and source-to-sea management to sustain livelihoods, ecosystems, and economic development across the region.
·The Catuane Groundwater Project, funded by the Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI), which is improving access to safe and reliable drinking water while strengthening community resilience through sustainable groundwater development in southern Mozambique.

Through these initiatives, INMACOM continues to demonstrate the importance of regional cooperation in addressing water challenges, protecting ecosystems, and supporting sustainable socio-economic development.

We were honoured to welcome His Majesty King Mswati III to the INMACOM exhibition stand during the ongoing Eswatini International Trade Fair. The theme for this year’s trade fair is "Unlocking Green Economy Opportunities for Sustainable Trade"

During the visit, His Majesty was introduced to the work of INMACOM and its efforts to promote sustainable, cooperative management of shared water resources across the Incomati and Maputo River Basins.

His Majesty was also briefed on key regional initiatives being implemented by INMACOM, including:
•The VUNWE Integrated Program (2026-2029), which strengthens transboundary water cooperation, institutional capacity, and basin-wide planning for sustainable water management.
•The UNDP/GEF-8 INMACOM Project, funded by the Global Water Partnership Global Environment Facility and implemented by UNDP Eswatini with the ex*****on by the Global Water Partnership (GWPSA). The project supports the Incomati and Maputo Watercourse Commission (INMACOM) and its three Member States, Republic of South Africa, the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Republic of Mozambique, to strengthen basin‑wide planning, data and information systems, climate and disaster risk preparedness, and source‑to‑sea management, so that shared water resources can better sustain livelihoods, ecosystems and economic development across the region.
•The Catuane SADC - Groundwater Management Institutewater Project, a regional water security initiative improving access to safe and reliable drinking water while strengthening community resilience through sustainable groundwater development.

The visit reinforced the importance of water as a vital resource for sustainable development, ecosystem protection under the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and enhanced collaboration among regional stakeholders.
