AfriWater CoP

AfriWater CoP The Africa Water AfriWater CoP is a coalition of organizations founded in 2011 promoting participatory approaches to Integrated Water Resource Management

Approaches to water management have undergone significant changes over the years due to the unsustainable nature of the water management practices already in place. AfriWater CoP was formed and it includes all the practitioners who promote bottom up approach to water management in Africa. Water being a critical resource is under threat form the various sectors and a comprehensive system of managem

ent has to be implemented to the lowest level. AfriWater CoP works with the CSOs at the River basin level with the main goals of developing their capacity to influence policy formulation and implementation and promote Sustainable River Basin Management.

On March 2 and 3, AfriWater CoP's member Development Institute from Ghana and Technical Partner Both ENDS were present to the Kick Off meeting of the EU funded consortium AfriAlliance. The meeting took place in Delft, the Netherlands at the office of UNESCO-IHE. The role of AfriWater CoP is to include grassroots voices and expertise in this exciting new knowlegde platform on water and climate change.

A network of African-European water-related organisations initiated the AfriAlliance to prepare Africa for future climate change challenges by having African and European stakeholders work together in the areas of water innovation, research, policy, and capacity development. The project is financed…

Wetlands for our Future: Sustainable Livelihoods is the theme this year as we mark the World Wetlands Day 2016 today!!
Do you know the importance of wetlands? To the economy, the society and most importantly the ecosystem?
1. Wetlands are homes, feeding grounds, breeding grounds, and places of refuge for many species.
2. They are the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems.
3. Different types of vegetation found in and around wetlands include submerged water plants like seagrasses and eelgrasses, floating water plants such as lilypads and duckweed, emergent plants such as arums, and shrubs and trees like mangrove forest species.
4. Common different types of wetlands are swamp, marsh and bog.
5. Scientists, politicians, environmentalists, farmers, and developers have been debating the definition of a wetland for many years. With there being many definitions, wetlands can be confusing and controversial. To be called a wetland, an area must be filled or soaked with water at least part of the year. Some wetlands are dry for parts of the year.
6. Wetlands help to absorb wind and tidal forces.
7. Wetlands collect and hold water, preventing flooding – acting like a sponge, they absorb flood water and release it slowly into the ground.
8. Wetlands filter, clean and store water – acting as kidneys to other ecosystems.
9. Wetland biomes appear on every continent except Antarctica.
10. Wetlands can be fresh water, salt water, or a combination of the two.
11. They become refuge areas in droughts, and they often support rare and threatened plants and animals that are not found anywhere else.

Water is a connector not a sector, Climate change manifests itself most powerfully in the water cycle.
Failure to address the relationship between water and climate puts our future in jeopardy!!!!

On the 25-27 September 2015, at the UN Summit in New York, the SDGs were officially ushered in as the replacement to the MDGs. Our focus being on water was backed by SDG 6 which seeks to provide access to clean water and sanitation. Representatives of governments, international organizations, donors, national and trans-boundary basin organizations of rivers, lakes or aquifers, local authorities, of the civil society and companies, support the integration of Water into the Climate change Action Agenda, especially for initiating or strengthening necessary adaptation actions in the basins of rivers, lakes, aquifers and large wetlands. 2015 World Water Week theme: Water for Development

The role of water for development, this year’s World Water Week theme, cannot be overestimated. Water is the foundation for all aspects of human and societal progress. While we need to ensure access to safe water for those 1.8 billion people who do not have it today, we must also manage the global rise in demand for water from growing economies by increasing water productivity, and find incentives for using it more effectively. Water security is both a condition for, and a result of, sustainable development.

Food for thought!!

According to a new report for the UN: almost no industry is profitable if you include environmental costs. So, maybe it's time for some serious changes?

“When the Last Tree Is Cut Down, the Last Fish Eaten, and the Last Stream Poisoned, You Will Realize That You Cannot Eat Money.”

This prophecy is becoming a more and more brutal reality. But, even today, not every person is aware of the horrible effects our lifestyles have on nature. See these evocative pictures that should make all concerned of what happens around them.

UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon's message this World Environment Day, “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”
http://www.un.org/sg/statements/index.asp?nid=8702

Humanity continues to consume far more natural resources than the planet can sustainably provide. Many of the Earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points. It is time for us to change.
