Dexon to Showcase Crack System at IPCE 2026

Many operators have only seen crack-detection ILI system on a spec sheet. This September, we’re bringing ours to Calgary's International Pipeline Conference & Expo (IPCE).

Weighing in at 1,000+ lbs, 20-in. in diameter, and fully assembled, the UT-CD Hawk was built for transmission lines and is a sight integrity experts won't want to miss.

Beside it will sit an ILI system on the other end of the range: the 3-in. Flexi-ILI, which was engineered to pig the unpiggable—supply lines, gathering systems, back-to-back 1D bends, low flow, and more.

A paper co-authored by Goratouch Ongtrakulkij, Dexon’s innovation lead, will also be presented, laying out hard spot inspection methods that H₂ and CO₂ operators will not want to miss.

As Europe transitions to hydrogen, a gap has emerged among professionals responsible for its transport and storage. Stephan Tappert’s upcoming paper, "Preparing Pipeline Workforce for Hydrogen: Safety, Integrity, and Competence for the Energy Transition," aims to address that shortfall.

Hydrogen introduces a unique threat profile compared to traditional oil & gas products—ranging from increased risks introduced by hydrogen-induced cracking to an explosive force 12× greater than methane.

Stephan’s presentation will review the skills, knowledge, and safety culture integrity teams need to ensure a safe transition to hydrogen service—and, more importantly, offer guidance on how teams can bridge the gap.

After all, an integrity program is only as strong as the humans running it.

Dexon’s European & Middle East & Africa team will also be there with a booth. They will be accompanied by our 4-in. UT metal loss tool fresh off a successful run in France.

Supply line operators meticulously monitor their lines to ensure safe and efficient operations—but some, because of paperwork errors or vintage pipelines, don't know the internal diameter of their lines.

For daily flow, that doesn't matter. It does when it comes time to run an in-line inspection (ILI) tools.

A 6-in. Schedule 80 line gives a tool about 146 mm of bore. Lose 10 mm—the size of a green pea—and 7% of it is gone. Add a tight bend, where the tool needs that clearance to move through, and it could easily end up stuck.

For this reason, operators of pipes with unknown IDs often skip ILI for manual NDT.

The harder part: the classification society surveyor also has to see that structure before signing anything off — and normally that means a second person roping down after us.

Instead of having two inspectors hanging from the side of the ship, the surveyor watched live from outside while our team worked through the inspection.

With one team in the tank instead of two, Dexon delivered the job, satisfied the surveyor, and allowed the ship to continue its work confident in its integrity.

Most supply lines were never built for in-line inspection.

Unlike transmission pipelines with dedicated launchers and receivers, supply lines link tanks, pumps, and process units with no easy way in or out for inspection tools.

Installing permanent access points can mean major piping changes and costly outages— often exponentially more expensive than the inspection itself.

Temporary access solutions include: removable spool pieces, flanged connections, or engineered access points that let tools like tethered devices, ILI pigs, or robotics get in.

Dexon's Flexi-ILI Dolphin takes it further — a free-swimming, bi-directional tool that drops in through simple access points for high-res ultrasonic coverage.

Bottom line: before you can find defects, you need a way in. Access is the real first challenge—and Dexon’s Dolphin gives operators another choice when it comes inspection time.

Wind turbines may look simple, but they are constantly bending, vibrating, and adjusting to changing wind loads.

Their blades can flex by several metres, towers sway in strong winds, and lightning strikes are surprisingly common. Offshore turbines face even tougher conditions, including salt spray, waves, humidity, and difficult maintenance access.

Over time, this can lead to corrosion, fatigue cracking, blade erosion, coating failure, and damage around welds and bolts.

Cross-training works for elite athletes—and it works for pipeline inspectors too.

Recently, Dexon’s ILI inspectors trained on our proprietary IRIS ultrasonic inspection system, used for heat exchangers, boilers, and small-diameter tubing.

IRIS and pipeline ILI may look very different, but both rely on the same ultrasonic fundamentals: sound propagation, coupling, calibration, wall-thickness measurement, and signal interpretation.

That crossover matters in the field. Inspectors who understand the physics behind multiple technologies can troubleshoot faster, spot data-quality issues earlier, and make better decisions when conditions change.
