Thaweephant Farm Launches Phuket’s First Cage-Free Eggs, Moving Towards a Sustainable Food System
On March 8, 2025, Thaweephant Phuket held a press conference to announce the launch of cage-free eggs for the first time in Phuket province. The event was presided over by Mr. Sophon Suwannarat, Governor of Phuket, and took place at Thaweephant Farm. This marks a significant milestone in the local livestock industry’s transition towards more animal- and environmentally-friendly food production.
This shift results from a collaboration between Thaweephant Farm and Catalyst Social Enterprise, which aims to promote fair and sustainable consumption. Both organizations believe that this change will help Thailand move towards a food system that prioritizes animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
Mr. Sophon Suwannarat, Governor of Phuket, stated, “The introduction of cage-free eggs is a significant step in elevating the standards of Phuket’s livestock industry. It also meets the expectations of tourists who are increasingly concerned about animal welfare and environmental sustainability, aligning with Phuket’s vision as a World Destination.”
Cage-free eggs come from hens raised in a system that allows them to move freely and exhibit natural behaviors. This production method is gaining popularity worldwide. Thaweephant Farm aims to expand production and distribute its cage-free eggs to supermarkets, restaurants, and hotels across Phuket, making environmentally friendly products more accessible to residents and tourists.
Last year, Thaweephant Farm successfully met its target of increasing the proportion of cage-free hens by 10%, reaching a total of 12,500 hens. The farm plans to increase this number by an additional 10% annually, ensuring long-term growth in sustainable and animal-friendly egg production. This achievement makes Thaweephant Farm the first in Phuket and the first in the southern Thai egg farming industry to adopt cage-free practices.
The launch of Thaweephant Farm’s cage-free eggs not only responds to the growing demand for ethical food choices but also plays a crucial role in positioning Phuket as a model for sustainable food industry development.
