FOOD SAFETY CRISIS PREPAREDNESS – BANGKOK, THAILAND

We are delighted to share with you the first Food Safety Crisis Preparedness workshop in 2024 organized by AETS-Thailand which took place in Bangkok, Thailand on 29 April - 03 May 2024. The workshop was attended by 32 national competent authorities from 9 different countries in Asia, Southern and Central Europe that are responsible for food safety controls, contingency planning and crisis management. Ms. Laurent Lourdais, First Counsellor of the EU Delegation to Thailand graced the workshop by giving the opening remarks. The discussion revolves on the early warning or emerging risks about potential crises or incidents related to food safety, food safety crisis preparedness and management tools, INFOSAN EU framework, risk communication plans, constraints and challenges. The competent authorities had the chance to participate in a group simulation exercises where they demonstrated their abilities in performing collaborative approaches ensuring effective crisis management response. Indeed, it was a fruitful and successful first workshop of the year!

EU IMPORT CONDITIONS FOR FISHERY PRODUCTS - ABIDJAN, COTE D'IVOIRE

The workshop on EU Import Conditions for Fishery Products which took place in Abidjan, Cote d’ Ivoire on 12-15 December 2023 was attended by 38 national competent authorities from 16 different African countries. The workshop, which was led by five high-level professionals from the EU Member States focused on the EU’s food safety control systems in place governing the production and placing on the market of fishery products. Other topics covered were the ‘EU-listing’ process, how official controls are to be funded, and how audits are being conducted.

The workshop on EU Controls on Food and Feed of Non-Animal Origin or FFNAO was held in Surabaya, Indonesia on 20-24 November 2023. It was attended by 31 national competent authorities from 10 different countries in Asia that are involved in the field of food and feed of non-animal origin products. The workshop provided training and valuable information about increased controls and emergency measures at entry in the EU, legal framework on SPS, pesticides residue, contaminants and microbiology. The last Food Safety Crisis Preparedness workshop in 2023 organized by AETS-Thailand took place in Tbilisi, Georgia on 02-06 October 2023. It was attended by 30 national competent authorities from 11 different countries in Asia, Central Asia, North-Eastern, Eastern and Central Europe that are in charge of food safety controls, contingency planning and crisis management. The workshop discussed about the WHO INFOSAN and EU framework and tools for food safety crisis preparedness and management, early warning or emerging risk information platforms as source of information about potential crises or incidents, crisis-mode operational procedures to speed up effective action during the crisis and to enable coordinated crisis communication, and common constraints challenges, weaknesses and good practices.

SAFETY OF PLANT AND PLANT PRODUCTS - DAKAR, SENEGAL

The workshop on Safety of Plants and Plant Products took place in Dakar, Senegal on 08-12 May 2023 which was attended by 49 national competent authorities from 12 West African countries that are involved in the development and application of regulation and standards related to plant health. The workshop covered the following topics - EU rules on plant health aiming to protect crops, fruits, vegetables, flowers, ornamentals and forests from harmful pests and diseases; EU process of approval of active substances, authorization of plant protection products, calculation of the MRLs, use of pesticides database and principles GAP; EU legislation on contaminants especially the plant toxins and mycotoxins, sampling and analysis, the organization of the EU Reference Laboratories, and; EU legislation on food hygiene, requirements on the microbiological criteria.

ANIMAL DISEASE PREPAREDNESS - MANILA, PHILIPPINES

AETS-Thailand had organised the 'Animal Disease Preparedness' workshop in Manila, Philippines on 13-17 March 2023. The EU-funded regional workshop had trained 42 national competent authorities from different Southeast-Asian and East-Asian countries about animal disease preparedness and animal disease control. The ADP workshop was spearheaded by five highly-experienced animal health experts from various EU Member States who shared their knowledge, experience and expertise in the 5-day workshop. It was also graciously attended by representatives from the European Union (DG Health and Food Safety), Food and Agriculture Organziation of the United Nations (UN FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).
