This project delves into people’s behavior during the rare meteorological occurrence of rain in Qatar. It centers on exploring how communities commemorate rainy days, shedding light on the festivities, rituals, and specific activities that define these moments of little precipitation. This project is targeted to all members of Qatari society as well as tourists, encompassing diverse cultural backgrounds within and outside the country. Many places around the world associate rain with sadness or consider it a commonplace weather phenomenon. In Qatar, it is a moment of blessing, happiness, and excitement. Nagmat by Hissa Al-Mahmoud

Nagmat نغمات is a project that sheds light on the underground private tradition of playing the oud.
A culturally significant instrument that is played privately mainly by men in different places such as the majlis and the desert.

The oud is often played privately as some people view it as taboo yet others view it as part of a quiet ritual where they play the oud, surrounded by close friends and family. Always covering their faces to keep their identity hidden.

SHAAL by Maryam Almannai

Combining the Qatari symbol of resilience and beauty, the desert rose crystal, with the timeless elegance of silk women’s scarves creates a fusion of cultural significance and contemporary style. The intricate patterns of the desert rose crystal, reminiscent of Qatar’s harsh yet breathtaking desert landscape, intertwine gracefully with the luxurious texture of silk, symbolizing strength and grace.

Moreover, infusing traditional Qatari men’s winter wear with the iconic cashmere Shawl Ghutra adds a rich layer of heritage and warmth. The Shaal Ghutra, with its intricate weave and vibrant colors, provides unparalleled comfort and protection against the winter chill. Together, these elements form a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, celebrating the cultural heritage of Qatar while offering a unique and sophisticated fashion statement for both men and women.

Al San3a by Alyaa Al Shaibani

Al San3a” is a classic card game that brings friends and families together for hours of fun and excitement. In this project, my priority is to bring together families and implode laughter into their lives.

The idea of their being a girl who’s known as “Al San3a”. This description of a girl isn’t known or used in any other language except for Arabic — Al San3a translates to the best girl around. She knows how and when to serve especially when it comes to food. With elements relating back to food, I aim to identify her.

Mrasmeen” is a project that presents Qatari culture and traditional men’s clothing in Qatar. The term “Mrasmeen” encompasses the entirety of the attire, including the “thoob,” “ghutra,” “egal,” and “gahfiya.” This endeavor illustrates the unique style of the Qatari “thoob” and its distinctions from similar attire in other nations. Additionally, it highlights the importance of these garments and showcases the commitment of Qatari men to upholding this cherished tradition. The project features two main items: a postcard and a tote bag. Each tote bag includes a small card containing information to educate individuals about the Qatari “thoob.” Meanwhile, the postcard showcases a step-by-step image on its back, demonstrating the correct method of wearing Qatari clothing. The goal is to educate men worldwide about this cultural attire, encouraging them to try wearing it themselves.

Qamash by Shahd Al Shahwani

In “Qumash,” I explore the beloved tradition of searching for fabrics to create Jalabiyas, which are an integral part of Qatari culture. This tradition involves a ritualistic journey of exploration, where individuals venture out into the vibrant fabric markets to find the perfect textiles to craft their Jalabiyas. Jalabiyas are more than just garments; they hold a special place in Qatari society, representing identity, heritage, and personal expression. The process of selecting fabrics for Jalabiyas is deeply rooted in tradition, often requiring meticulous attention to detail and a discerning eye for quality. Through highlighting the tradition of seeking out fabrics for Jalabiyas, “Qumash” pays tribute to the time-honored practices that have shaped Qatari identity for generations. It invites guests to immerse themselves in this cultural journey, fostering a deeper appreciation for the artistry and importance of fabric selection in Qatari society. All exquisite tote bags are handcrafted from this iconic fabric. Each tote bag is a labor of love, meticulously crafted and adorned with hand embroidery, infusing every stitch with the essence of tradition and individuality. Alongside the tote bags, I have curated fabric swatch cards that showcase the beauty of different fabrics, along with what fabric material, occasions for which they are worn, and the age groups they are suitable for.
