BRINGING THE POTATO TO A GLAMOROUS LEVEL:

"Now THAT'S what I call BRANDING!!!!" Olivia "RUSH' Knecht

Article from the Idaho Farm Bureau Quarterly Newsletter/Winter 2005

When Marilyn Monroe posed for photographs wearing a potato sack, she wasn’t acting as a spokeswoman for Idaho potatoes.

However, the images have had the effect of promoting Idaho spuds.

According to the Idaho potato commission, a columnist in 1951 commented that Monroe’s stunning figure would look good even if she wore a potato sack.

Her publicity agent took advantage of the comments and made a dress from a burlap potato bag, obtained in a local produce market, which Monroe wore for a photo session in 1952.

The bag, which had been packed at Long Produce in Twin Falls, displayed the Idaho identification.

Years later, the Idaho Potato Commission used one of the photo to create a limited number of posters to be used as conventional gifts.

“it’s a classic”, says Potato Growers of Idaho Information Director Keith Frank, who has one of the poster in his office.
