Even though the main emphasis for a particular type of course (e.g. Team Development) is clear ,the exact content (choice) of topics in each one of these “fixed courses, may differ from course to course, depending on the particular training needs of each group (as all groups are of different composition, with participants not always having the same personal backgrounds and work experiences). In other words, the main emphasis (focus area) is clear, but the individual choice and composition of topics for each course may differ according to each client’s (and group’s) particular training needs. When we design, plan and conduct a workshop, our starting point is that workshops are different. Each new group must always be perceived as a “new story” – we are dealing with a new combination of personalities, which will bring out other dynamics, and create a new and different workshop. During the workshop, we make sure to keep focused, alert and observant, always “reading” the mood of the participants, observing the ongoing dynamics and looking where the process is leading us (and based on this deciding where to go next). Driven as we are by a professional obsession to try to make each new workshop a little bit better than the last one, we are always looking for ways to improve our courses and ourselves. We know that this process of continuous improvement will never end – but on the other hand, we will always be better. To design, plan and conduct a good workshop is not easy. First of all, the workshop needs to be interesting enough to capture the participants’ full attention, throughout the whole length of the training. The content needs to be stimulating and fun (which we think is essential for effective learning), and the participants must feel that the course benefit them (bring valuable new insights)on both a professional and personal level. And… secondly, we have to make sure that the workshop also matches your (our client’s) organizational needs and in an effective way meets your goals and objectives. To succeed with all of this ,a great deal of pre-course planning is naturally required As part of this work, we prefer to meet personally with our client, before we design our course, to discuss our client’s goals and think it is important to get as much information about the group as possible. After we are ready, we come back to you to present and discuss our ideas for the course. When we have reached an agreement (your approval) we then start our own internal (and very detailed) course planning, by writing our internal Trainer’s Guide(a new version for each new workshop) – where the steps for conducting each topic is laid out in detail, session by session. When we are ready we know exactly where (and why) we are going with the different topics of the course. Everything is well rehearsed, and we can, as a result of this, better focus on the process(How to bring out issues and answers from the group), without having to worry about remembering the course content – WHAT to say.
