Have you ever searched for a coach? Then you might have been on one of these awful free connection calls that basically make you feel like you are being pushed into a corner and told that you should buy their super expensive miracle programme or else your life will be a disaster and you’ll end up sad and poor.

I am not like that.

Maybe if I tried their hard sales tactics I would sell many more packages and become very rich, but I’d rather stick to my values and treat people how I like to be treated. With honesty and kindness.

So. If you are running a creative small business or you are thinking of running a business and you find it hard to focus, prioritise or gain any clarity or direction on your own, I am your coach. 👋

I am very good at helping people see the wood for the trees 🌳 so that you feel less alone and know what to do next. In terms of marketing, strategies, mindset etc. I love working with people 1-1, and I have had many happy clients so far.

I also don’t want to waste anybody’s time on calls if you have no idea what private business coaching costs (I mean, I need to earn a living too!), so I have put the link to my offers with prices in the comments. That way you can take a look, and see if any of my offers seem like a good fit for your needs and budget.

You are more than welcome to book a free first call with me too. I promise it’ll be a pleasant one ☺️.

Ever been asked you 'what you do for a living'?

Did you explain with full confidence that you run a creative business?

Or did you end up mumbling something vague?

Or, (and I know many of you are still in this boat), tell them about your boring office day job instead?

Why do we find it so hard to tell people what we do as creatives?

Two reasons:

1. We don't take ourselves seriously (yet), because we think we are not successful enough to call ourselves a (fill in the blank) or entrepreneur

2. Most people don't quite understand what we do and there really is no point. ("Oh, you're quite arty then, are you? My neighbour is an artist too" 🙄)

How do you talk to your annoying uncle John about your business sorting out people's wardrobes, like my client Ali? Or when you teach dressage horse riders to create freestyle dances, like my client Sandra?

They usually glaze over. Or worse; they raise their eyebrows, asking you 'if there's any money in that'.

Right?

You can do two things here;

- You shrug your shoulders, walk away and pour yourself another glass of wine.

- Or, you can try and become more confident and blow them away with your answer.

Developing a powerful elevator pitch is THE best way to communicate what you do as a business. Forget about your cynical uncle John, you need this tool to speak to your ideal client.

Because if you don't know how to talk about your business clearly and to-the-point... then you won't attract many clients at all, and certainly not the right ones.

Want to work on this with me, ? I still have limited slots available this month for a 90-minute Power Session, perfect for creating that elevator pitch together.

I have helped many clients before you sharpen their message, and as a result pull in the $$$$.

No more stammering…you and your business are ready for so much more.

We often identify by our careers and job titles, but who are YOU without it? Stripped bare and naked? You are so much more than a coach, a designer, a teacher, a mother, a father, a team leader. Who are you deep down? Describe your essence in three words in the comments 👇👇👇

Pricing. What is best?

I had a conversation yesterday about this. Often, we get frustrated and confused by yet another ‘NO’ from a potential client, or a ‘Let me have a think about it’…and then norhing. 🤯🙄

What is this? Is it you? Are you too expensive?

Then we start creating cheaper offers, lower ticket items, discounts, and more payment plans, just to catch some smaller fish.

But they don’t bite either. You may get the odd one-off sale, but it doesn’t boost your business nor income. Trust me, I tried it.

“Who were your clients with the best results, Nina?” I was asked yesterday by my friend.

“The ones who paid full price, and worked with me for six months.” I answered without hesitation.

“They called, they had already made up their mind that they needed a coach, they already had a business, and they needed someone to help them turn things around.”

It was an eye opener for me saying this out loud. Because, yes, my best clients are the ones who are taking themselves seriously and are proactive.

The ones who are excited to work with me as a coach and who understand that the price of the programme is an investment, which they will earn back (and more!) once they implement the actions we come up with.

I’ve had many clients who made their investment back within six months of working with me, often much sooner.

Why are people not buying from you? It’s not the price, it is the timing, they are not ready, or your message is ‘off’.

A clear message, explaining the value of your services, and who it will benefit exactly, is your golden ticket to more sales.

You will always be too expensive for the ones whose need for change is not urgent enough. Catch the fish who are really struggling, not the ones who are still comfortable enough to bumble on. You don’t visit a garage until your car has a problem. Wanna keep the car on the road?

Three leads this week telling me: I found you through ChatGPT”.

What’s going on?

ChatGPT seems to be taking over from Google as a search engine.

What does this mean for your business?

This means that it is more important than ever to have your messaging crystal clear online. 🌟🌟🌟

People are looking for help with something and ask ChatGPT to point them in the right direction.

You will only be suggested if you tick the boxes of the prompt that has been put into the AI machine.

Make sure that you are discoverable! Your title, headers, description, and your message have to be on point to attract those ideal clients.

Wishy washy website copy will not get you seen. Not by Google nor by ChatGPT.

I have been fed up of social media for a while now. Not just because it has become such a mudslinging pit of anger and hate, but because I am addicted.

There. I said it. Scroll-aholics Anonymous. Who’s with me?

I pick up my phone to check Instagram more often that I would like to admit. First thing in the morning, last thing at night. As an escape, a pacifier, a dopamine hit.

Instead of creating, reading, walking or simply being present...I scroll. For hours.

I noticed it makes me feel agitated, scattered, anxious and lethargic. My mind jumps from one thing to the next. Adhd? No, scroll brain.

And I feel guilty. Because my kids see me doing it too. I always have my phone at the end of my arm.

And now with the latest saga by snake Zuck, do I really still want to give so much of my sacred mind space and power away to his platform that has Zucked us in by the billions?

Nothing is private anymore, it seems. Perhaps it is time to protect the only thing we still have control over: our mind. Before we own absolutely nothing (but will be happy 🤨)

I have seen many people suggesting alternatives for Meta. Bluesky, Mastodon, Vero, Pixelfed, you name it. I tried them out. I made profiles. I had a look around. And I gave up. Maybe too soon.

But I simply don’t have the energy to spend so much time engaging, posting, chatting, sharing. I know I am not alone.

The truth is also, 99% of my coaching clients come from Google searches. Better to focus on converting more of my web traffic, who are already hot leads looking for help.

I am planning to give social media a rest for The Creative Business Coach. I will focus on my website, blog and email list as my main marketing channels for now. Digital minimalism.

I do send out a lovely email each week with my musings - which, of course, are often to make you think outside of the box.

I get plenty of quirky artistic creatives who desperately need help, and REALLY want to work with me, but simply don’t have the thousands to spend. I always hear such sadness and disappointment in their voice when they realise my 6-month programme is out of reach.

Now most other coaches would talk them into borrowing money or make them feel bad for not investing in themselves. “Well, what will happen if you do nothing?” They ask. Or “Well, you booked the call today, so there is obviously an urgency. You really want things to change, don’t you?” 🥹

And although these are valid questions, I think the pressure and sometimes pushy tone in these sales calls is unethical … Many coaches charge anything between $5k and well over $10k for six months of 1:1 business coaching (my most expensive package with unlimited calls currently sits at $6k). Of course many creatives don’t have this money spare, especially startups.

Many coaches would also advise me to ignore those types of clients and just aim for the higher paying ones.

It doesn’t sit well with me. I am not a charity but I strongly believe in the power of art, unique out of the box projects and creativity, and focusing solely on making money for myself as a coach is not one of my core values.

After having yet another person in the DMs needing help but struggling to invest, I decided to create an offer combining Messaging & Strategy, at a very accessible price ($310 - and you can even spread the cost!). Am I mad? Most business coaches would say so. It will really clean up your marketing strategy is all I can say and make 2025 look a lot different from last year. Promise. DM me if you want more info.

I never liked my surname, Eggens. It sounds very Dutch provincial and farmer-like. And all I ever wanted to be was a woman of the world! The truth is, it is my family name. My ancestors were farmers. Nothing to look down upon. Food growers, hard workers. My grandad owned his own potato farming business. The people you see in the photo are my grandparents and their siblings, at a very young age. This must have been taken before 1940. It is a great photo.

This week, a friend made me realise something that forever changed how I feel about my name. I am so thankful for this, and I can’t believe I never saw this.

You know what Eggens means? It comes from the Dutch word ‘eg’ which in English means harrow. A harrow is a farming tool. And you know what it is for? It prepares the soil, making traces in it, so that seeds can be planted and crops can grow.

I love my name and its meaning. It suddenly all made sense.

I used to draw ALL the time as a kid. I wanted to go to art school. But yeah, a well meaning parent told me it would be better to study something else. Recognise that? I chose Art History at University. A fantastic course, but not creative. I put down my pencil and brushes and hardly touched them again until I was in my 40s. Instead, I rolled into a career as marketing manager for arts centres, promoting other artists…The irony! I remember often feeling a pang of envy when watching someone’s work go up in the gallery.

All those years, I did stay active in music. I played and sang in numerous bands everywhere I moved to. And a few years ago, the painting creeped back into my life.

I was working with a business coach at the time, build my own online coachig biz, and she said: “Nina, this marketing and business coaching stuff and helping others you can already do. It is about time you put Nina the artist herself on stage now.” (thank you )

It was as if someone finally saw my essence and gave me permission to be an artist. Even though I never went to art school. And I can’t read music. So here I am. Painting and selling my art, and recording my first solo album as a singer-songwriter 🎉🎉🎉

What’s in a title anyway? Do whatever you want to do in life. And if you need permission (you don’t!), I am giving it to you today.
