🇹🇭☀️ Thailand is entering a new phase in its energy market.
The expansion of the Direct PPA (DPPA) framework and Third Party Access to all industrial sectors represents, in my view, a potentially major step forward.
It means moving towards a market where companies can purchase renewable energy directly from power producers, even when the generation facility is located far from the point of consumption, using the national electricity grid.
The framework is not yet fully operational, and one crucial element still needs to be defined: the wheeling charge, meaning the fee for transmitting electricity through the grid. This cost will largely determine how competitive and attractive the model will ultimately be.
After more than 12 years in Thailand’s solar energy sector, I believe the direction is becoming increasingly clear: we will no longer be talking only about solar panels on rooftops, but increasingly about PPAs, off-site renewable generation, battery energy storage and intelligent energy management.
Rooftop solar will continue to play a fundamental role, but it can become part of a much broader and more integrated energy ecosystem.
For those of us working in Thailand’s renewable energy industry today, this is the time to prepare for what comes next.
The energy transition is no longer just an environmental objective. It is becoming a new energy market and a major business opportunity. 🇹🇭⚡☀️
