Satsuma.

Before 2023 ended, we had a chance to visit a city in Kagoshima, Japan, called Ibusuki. There we visited a museum called Satsuma Denshokan. Upon our visit, we were warmly welcomed by おばちゃん who showed us around the museum telling us stories of how each pristine pieces came to be and of the museum itself. We were told that the artifacts displayed in the museum are called Satsuma, which are types of pottery originated in Kagoshima in the 1600s. At one point, it became so popular that most of the Satsumas ware were being exported to Europe. However, as an avid Satsuma collector, the museum’s owner, felt like it was his duty to bring them back where they originated and truly belonged. Thus, these pieces are bought and sent back from various cities in Europe, some came back with cultural alterations from their years there.

Leaving the museum feeling absolutely intrigued and challenged - I had an eye on one specific technique used on the ceramics that I really wanted to try. I wonder if we can replicate it?

Arriving back at our work, we discussed the technique and showed them to the teams and we get going. 11 days later, swipe left to see how we fare.

And as a tribute to おばちゃん who sparked our curiosity and inspire us, we named this article, Satsuma.
