Hidden gem teaching location in Thailand: Lampang!
Lampang is still called Muang Rot Ma — Horse Carriage City — and it earns the name. Wooden trading streets, teak buildings, canals, and shaded morning markets that have not been rebuilt for tourists.
Mornings here are cooler than the central plains, especially from November to February, when the forested ridges hold a breeze. The old quarter along the Wang River is compact. Bicycle or scooter. The commute to campus stays short.
The temples are different from most of the North. Late-nineteenth-century timber trade brought Burmese master carpenters. Wat Sri Chum still shows that work: multi-tiered wooden roofs and quiet courtyard gardens.
This is also Thailand’s ceramic heartland — the home of the hand-painted rooster bowl. Pottery studios and riverside cafés make an easy weekend if you want one.
Evenings are honest. Not neon. Night markets, espresso by the river, acoustic bars, ordinary dinners. If you want a loud scene every night, this is not that city.
If you want to teach well and still have a calm place to live, Lampang is one of the better-kept options in the North.
