(English below)
Strengthening Human Rights and Decent Work in Sugarcane Supply Chains
Smart and Sustainable Sugarcane: Innovation Pathways for ASEAN Farmers
Engr.
(ASEAN Sugar Alliance)
Patrick Paziener – CLAAS

On 21 May 2026, Fairagora Asia attended AGRITECHNICA ASIA as part of our support for Bonsucro and Isaara Institute in organizing panel discussions and contributing to the collective effort to advance more sustainable sugarcane supply chains.
One of the key discussions was Strengthening Human Rights and Decent Work in Sugarcane Supply Chains, with Manisha Majumdar - Regional Head, Asia-Pacific from Bonsucro helping frame the session, together with panelists including:
Belinda Hlatshwayo - United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Business and Human Rights Programme
Maximilian Pottler - International Organization for Migration (IOM), Thailand
Rangsit Hiangrat - Director General, Thai Sugar Millers Corporation Limited (TSMC)
Tharnsai Wannasri - Isaara Institute
This session reflected that responsible agricultural sourcing is not only about standards and compliance, but also about understanding the realities faced by workers on the ground. These include migrant worker challenges, language barriers, transparency, trust, and the gap between policy and actual practice.
Another important session was Smart and Sustainable Sugarcane: Innovation Pathways for ASEAN Farmers, which focused on the role of innovation, digital tools, and climate-smart agricultural approaches in helping farmers strengthen resilience, improve productivity, and build more sustainable farming systems.
The panelists included:
Mr. Jakgrit Kuntong - Senior Scientist and Division Chief at Thailand’s Office of the Cane and Sugar Board
Engr. Laverne Olalia - Sugar Regulatory Administration, leading research, remote sensing, and climate-smart innovations in the Philippines
Dr. Nonn Panitvong – Executive Director at Nakhonphet Sugar and biomass cogeneration leader, ASEAN Sugar Alliance
Dr. Nutthapol Asadathorn – Deputy Managing Director of Thailand's TRR Group/ Thai Sugar Millers' Corporation
Patrick Paziener - CLAAS, Asia and Africa, focused on advancing mechanization, precision farming, and technology-driven agricultural solutions
The discussion also highlighted innovations and practical approaches from different countries, including climate-resilient regenerative farming, smoke-free harvesting, women’s empowerment, and human rights due diligence. This session emphasized the importance of turning regional challenges into practical solutions that can be scaled, aligned with ESG principles, and responsive to the expectations of the global market.
Together, both sessions reflected the future of the sugarcane sector — one that is not only more efficient and sustainable, but also more inclusive, transparent, and truly mindful of people across the supply chain.
Fairagora Asia would like to thank all organizations, panelists, partners, producers, and stakeholders who joined the discussions and contributed to supporting sustainable progress in the sector.
