All GM A- and A-special body cars were completely restyled for 1973 with hardtop and convertible bodystyles completely eliminated due to pending Federal safety regulations. The 1973-77 cars were available in Colonnade hardtop sedans, coupes and station wagons, which amounted to pillared bodystyles with frameless doors and windows. The last generation of its breed--the BIG, American luxury car Imperial and its variants. The final full-size Imperials, 1974 & 75, while technically not of the "fuselage" period, have more in common with their 1969-1973 predecessors than with anything that came after them. The New Yorker that succeeded it from 1976 to 1978 is, in essence, an Imperial at its heart. The distinctive and luxurious but short-lived 1981-to-1983 Imperial would be Chrysler's last rear-drive luxury model for more than two decades.
