Apple Set to Open First Turkish Retail Store in January 2014

Following an extended effort over the past several years, Apple is set to open its first retail store in Istanbul, Turkey at beginning of 2014, reports The Wall Street Journal. The store will reportedly span over 2000 square meters (over 20,000 square feet) and will be located in the heart of Istanbul's new multi-use Zorlu Center, between luxury retailers Burberry and Louis Vutton.

The store is currently under construction and surrounded by a barricade, but is reportedly set to feature a cubic glass ceiling, making it only the second store to boast the architectural feature. Previous photos have shown the store to be located underneath a central plaza at the shopping center, with the barricades perhaps enclosing a plaza-level entryway similar to that seen at Apple's iconic Fifth Avenue retail store located in New York City. The report also states that Apple is working on a total of four stores in the country, with the Zorlu store scheduled to be the first to open.

Technology or Innovation Zones in Turkey

Technology Development Zones (TDZs) are areas designed to support R&D activities and attract investments in high technology fields.
There are 50 TDZs of which 34 are operational and 16 have been approved and are currently under construction. Ankara has six TDZs, Istanbul has five, Kocaeli has four, Izmir has three while the other provinces shown in the map below have one each.

Advantages of Technology Development Zones

Revenues derived from software development and R&D activities are exempt from income and corporate taxes until December 31, 2023.

Sales of application software produced exclusively in TDZs are exempt from VAT until December 31, 2023. Examples include software for systems management, data management, business applications, different business sectors, the Internet, mobile phones and military command control.

Salaries of R&D and support personnel employed in the zone are exempt from all taxes until December 31, 2023. The number of the support personnel covered by the exemption shall not exceed 10 percent of the number of the R&D personnel.

Enterprises may make the investment, required for the production of the technological product obtained as a result of the R&D projects conducted in the zone, in the TDZ, if deemed suitable by the operator company and allowed by the Ministry.

50 percent of the employer’s share of the social security premium will be paid by the government for 5 years until 31.12.2024.

Turkey’s total pharmaceutical sales (including OTC sales) are projected to grow by 8.8 percent a year between 2013 and 2017, reaching $19 billion.88 Estimating the size and growth of the market is complicated due to the government’s moves to cut pharmaceutical prices and their encouragement in the use of generics as part of its efforts to reduce public health spending. According to the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association of Turkey (IEIS), the market share of generics rose to 38.1 percent in 2011 but fell back in 2012 to 37.7 percent.89.
