Measuring 458 meters in length and 70 meters in breadth, the Seawise Giant, also called the Knock Nevis, is the biggest ship ever built. The Seawise Giant is longer than the Vatican City, which has an area of around 44 hectares (0.44 square kilometers), to put its enormous size into perspective.

Originally named the Happy Giant oil tanker, the ship was put into service in 1979 and had a record deadweight tonnage of 564,763 metric tons, which allowed it to carry more than 4.5 million barrels of oil on a single journey. The Seawise Giant finally sold for scrap in 2009, due to economical reasons.

Happy April 23rd, National Sovereignty and Children's Day! 🎉

On this special day, we celebrate the founding of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, and the bright future embodied by our children.

We should cherish the innocence, curiosity, and dreams of our little ones, and work together to build a better world for them.

Heave: The term "heave" describes the wave-induced up-and-down motion of a ship. Comprehending heave is crucial as it can flood a ship, making excessive downward heave dangerous.

Sway: A ship's side-to-side motion brought on by lateral wave motion or wind is known as sway. This motion is important for maintaining course and stability since it influences the vessel's lateral drift.

Surge: A ship's forward and backward motion caused by marine conditions such as head or following seas is known as surge. For safe navigation, surge needs to be considered as it affects the vessel's longitudinal movement.

Roll: A ship's side-to-side tilting motion brought on by waves hitting its hull is known as roll. Roll must be managed because too much rolling can compromise passenger comfort, cargo security, and stability.

Pitch: A vessel's up-and-down revolution about its transverse axis is referred to as pitch. Comprehending pitch is essential as it impacts the ship's fore and aft motion, affecting speed, fuel economy, and crew comfort.

Yaw: A vessel's rotation along its vertical axis is known as yaw. Controlling yawing is crucial for safe navigation since it can affect the ship's heading and direction.

The chief mate (first mate), second mate, and third mate are the several ranks of mates. The chief mate, often known as the first officer, is in control of the ship's deck department, which includes the deck crew and cargo. They are responsible for managing environmental protection, safety protocols, cargo operations, and navigation.

Mates help in docking, oversee the deck crew, monitor the ship's location, rotate watches with the captain and other officers, and make sure the cargo is stored appropriately. They are essential to preserving the stability and safety of the ship, particularly while transporting dangerous materials.

It is necessary to have at least a high school diploma or equivalent and additional training to become a mate.
