Conflict: Workplace vs. Society

“We know that differences in personalities and opinions are drivers of conflict.” (McNish, 2023, Ch. 1, Article 1)

In the workplace, conflict doesn’t disappear, but it is often managed through “contemporary measures to manage disruptive conflict,” whether that’s policies, mediation, or designated leaders who “may have formal or informal authority to resolve conflict.”

These processes are underpinned by a crucial element: mutual trust between employer and employee.

Society, however, is another story. As the text notes, “it is much more difficult to balance competing interests because of the well-entrenched personal beliefs, for example, religious and political affiliations.” Laws exist to mitigate conflict, but without the same basis of trust, resolution is slower and more divisive.

The question is: if our workplaces, microcosms of the wider society, can develop systems that make conflict navigable, what lessons can society at large take from them?

Technology & Work-Life Balance

“The development and accessibility of technology have allowed employees the benefit of working at home and enjoying a flexible, work-life balance. This can positively impact on family life and therefore the wider society. However, the fall-out… is the possible reduction in the level of human interactions and the opportunities derived from developing and enhancing social skills while working in teams.” (McNish, 2023, Ch. 1, Article 1)

For many, remote work has been transformative, more time with family, less time commuting, greater flexibility.

But there’s another side: without those hallway conversations, team lunches, or spontaneous problem-solving moments, trust and connection can weaken. Over time, it’s not just about productivity, it’s about the very social fabric of work.

Has technology made your workplace relationships stronger, or more distant?

The Daily Buzz!
The Workplace as a Micro-Society

Our workplaces aren’t just job sites. They’re little societies of their own, each with its own culture, unspoken rules, and leadership styles.

Think about it: every office, shop floor, or Zoom room has its own “way of doing things.” There are people who bring everyone together, rules that keep things fair (or sometimes don’t), and moments of conflict that test relationships. In many ways, it’s no different from the wider world we live in.

“Our workplaces are made up of people distinguished by age, gender, socio-geographic influences, political, religious and sexual persuasions. This diversity is a resource, but its patterns and complexities must be understood and managed. Discipline is fostered when deviant behaviour is confronted, and differences in personalities and opinions drive conflict — which must be managed without eroding trust.” (McNish, 2023, Ch. 1, Article 1)

And here’s the question worth asking: do you see your workplace as just a job, or as a community you’re part of?
Because if it’s the latter, then the way we show up at work isn’t just about the tasks we tick off, it’s about how we treat each other, how we lead, and what kind of culture we build together.

The Daily Buzz!
The Workplace as a Social Construct

“There are many links between our workplace and the wider society. Surely, lessons can be learned from one or the other for the greater good of all societal stakeholders. The true learning, therefore, is that no individual or society operates in a vacuum, and our over-lapping dependencies dictate that effective communication and sharing of experiences will only benefit all participants.” (McNish, 2023, Ch. 1, p. 1).

Think about it: when you’ve had a good day at work, where you feel valued, listened to, and like what you do matters, you carry that energy home. You’ve got patience for your kids, time for your partner, and even a smile for the stranger.

But when work feels meaningless, when you’re ignored or treated like a cog in the machine, the opposite happens. You drag it home. You’re tired, frustrated, maybe even resentful. Multiply that across millions of people, and it’s no surprise it spills into our communities and society.

Our places of work are in themselves communities operating within workplace norms and culture, organised to achieve corporate goals. This is a society that is led by directors and shareholders and driven by employees for the sole purpose of economic power. Its impact on society is fundamentally the catalyst for national prosperity.

Therefore, we must always be mindful that the “world of work” makes up a significant nucleus of our developmental opportunities within the wider society.
