For Managers - the challenge of the ‘Yes Man’

Managers, beware the allure of the ‘Yes Man’ – the employee who flatters you relentlessly, praising everything you do and say. They’re easy to spot, but only if you haven’t let your ego cloud your judgment. ‘Yes Men’ often gain favor with managers and receive preferential treatment, from workload assignments to promotions. They don’t usually earn their rewards through merit, but they make managers feel good about themselves and secure in their ideas, leading to a better experience for them – often at the expense of more deserving employees.

On the other hand, employees who respectfully challenge your ideas, express alternative points of view, and create original thoughts are invaluable assets to your team. They can compliment your skills and experience by resolving your blind spots, helping your team execute better and provide increased value to the organization. The ‘Yes Man’, on the other hand, can only extend what you give them, so they’re handicapped by your own limitations.

Rewarding employees on merit and not perceived loyalty has a positive impact on teamwork, synergy, and psychological safety, all of which are key to employee morale, growth, and team success.

If you notice a team member excessively praising you, challenge yourself to see beyond your ego and determine their true intentions. Is their goal your favor (selfish) or what’s best for the team (altruistic)? Make the right choices accordingly.
