Every baby is wonderfully unique, and your little one’s daily rhythm will depend on their wake-up time, nap lengths, and personal cues. In the newborn stage, it’s completely normal for naps to be unpredictable—so don’t stress! Whether you’ve gotten yourself into a situation where you feel like your little one will only sleep in a swing, your first child slept in a bouncer and they were fine, or your sister swears by using a weighted sleep sack…..THESE OPTIONS ARE NEVER SAFE FOR SLEEP, SUPERVISED OR UNSUPERVISED!!

When babies are placed in these items, two things are extremely important to understand:
• Positional Asphyxia – This occurs when a baby’s head position restricts their ability to breathe properly. When babies are left to sleep in angled places like rockers, bouncers, swings and uninstalled car seats, this creates a major hazard. This is dangerous even if your child is supervised because a sleeping baby looks exactly the same as a baby who isn’t breathing!!

• Re- breathing – This happens when an infant breathes back in their own exhaled air. This can happen when babies sleep against the bumpers of a lounger or any surface. Again, supervising a baby won’t stop this from happening, as it can go undetected for a significant amount of time.

As for weighted sleep sacks, they can restrict a baby’s movement causing them to get into an unsafe position, that they can’t get out of.

If you have been using any of these for sleep, don’t stress about it. The best thing you can do is make changes based on learning new information!
