If I had to criticize the play, “Master of Carnival” by Euton Jarvis and Ronald Amoroso my position on it would be that we needed two more days so as to encourage more people to see it, but with so many things on in this carnival season it was easy to dismiss the play.
However I am here to share my thoughts as part of the creative team. As designer of costumes and set, there were special moments I cherished and to share one was to see the actors really own the play in the way they located themselves in the kitchen of the house. To see the actors become one with their character, the set and the costumes was truly the spectacle. Looking in, Delpino played by Adam Pascall, the main character, transformed his costume to bring the Biblical character of King Belshazzar to life. The audience agreed with great crescendo of hands clapping. The sing along which ended the play with the merry band of musicians led by the musical director Krisson Joseph was yet another experience.
Artistic director Belinda Barnes gave us a real treat as she directed the actors and musicians to sing the calypsoes of past and present, which saw the actors making choices to leave their characters behind to perform each rendition. I would like to thank all the actors, the creative team and Raymer Diaz for understanding and acknowledging the authenticity of the set through his construction and turning the corners of the set to allow for the bedroom. My costume team which included Fabrice Barker actor, and member of NTAC and every thing real and large. Dianne Wilson for arriving from New York in the nick of time to sew the costumes. Thank you Delpino for reminding us of the creative process of the time, the struggle and rising above the limitations of “poverty’’
Thank you all.
