Haitians displaced by hurricanes. Venezuelans seeking stability. Islanders wondering if they even have a future home as seas rise.

Reflection: What if we reimagined migration not as desperation, but as dignity? A chance to value human resilience, not penalise it.

The Caribbean is more water than land. Yet we often treat the ocean as scenery, not strategy.

That’s changing. The CAF just doubled its oceans funding to US$2.5B - a bold reminder that oceans aren’t just blue horizons. They’re transport, food, carbon sinks, tourism and protection.

Leaders who invest in oceans aren’t chasing charity. They’re shaping legacy.

--> Leadership thinks in centuries, not quarters.

Every barrel of oil, every megawatt of power today carries two weights:

--> Energy security.
--> Emissions.

For the Caribbean - and much of the world - this isn’t abstract. When hurricanes hit, LNG prices spike or grids buckle...people feel it directly. At the same time, the pressure to decarbonise is only accelerating.

This is the paradox of our time: leaders must deliver reliable, affordable energy and reduce emissions. One without the other is failure.

-> Leadership that resists this paradox will be remembered for delay.
-> Leadership that embraces it will be remembered for courage.

The energy transition needs both.

- Innovation: methane detection pilots, CCUS tests, renewables, AI solutions.
- Ex*****on: scaling those pilots across thousands of assets, grids and communities.

I’ve worked in startups, corporates and state firms. The biggest lesson?

Startups teach you speed.
Giants teach you structure.
Leadership is blending both.

We can’t transition on experiments alone. And we can’t scale outdated systems.

--> Leaders must innovate like startups - but execute like giants.
