Matura
Matura is the first of the turtle watching locations that one would come across if driving along the east-northeast coast of Trinidad. It is a rural village, which has a number of tourist attractions in the area including:
• The Rio Seco Waterfall.
• Long stretches of beachfront.
• Rich cultural diversity in the form of beliefs, folklore and customs.
• Diverse fauna including the Pawi, Red Howler Monkeys and Otters.
• Nesting Leatherback turtles throughout the months of March to September. Matura has, in fact, become known as one of the best turtle watching beaches and draws the largest percentage of eco-tourists visiting the country annually. . Visitors can take part in tours of both the beach and to the nearby Rio Seco Waterfall. Grand Riviere
Grande Riviere is a rural village situated on the north coast of Trinidad. It gets its name from the large river which runs through it, meeting the sea. For bathers, this allows the opportunity to combine sea bathing with river swimming in the same location. The area has become known for its great bird watching opportunities, being home to such species as the endangered Blue-throated Piping-Guan (Pawi), Crimson-crested Woodpecker, and Swallow-tailed Kite. It is also a primary nesting ground for large numbers of Leatherback turtles. The beach itself is quite wide, with a considerable length, and slopes steeply as it enters the sea. The shoreline is backed by different types of trees including almond. The flat plateau of the beach is an area of loose sand which is favoured by the turtles. The steepness of the slope and the height of waves during November to April make bathing unsafe at these times. Toco Region
Toco is situated on the north-eastern tip of Trinidad and is therefore the closest point to the sister isle of Tobago. A string of 14 villages is collectively referred to as the 'Toco Region' or the 'Matura to Matelot Region'. The Toco region is quite remote when compared to other parts of the country. An abundance of scenic bays, beaches and reefs make it a prime location for tourists who wish to get away from busier coastal areas. Perhaps the greatest draw of this region though is the Leatherback turtles. At present, eco-tourists can expect to enjoy:
