2002 Nissan Almera N16 QG15DE | P1320 & P0335 – Timing Problem

This Nissan Almera underwent diagnostic testing for intermittent stalling, rough idle and a persistent P0335 and P1320 codes following recent engine replacement.

The customer had already replaced both the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, but the vehicle stored:
• P1320 – Ignition Primary Signal
• P0335 – Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit

Cam & crank correlation testing identified the exhaust camshaft ~ 5.60° RE****ED relative to the crankshaft.

Mechanical Testing:

Compression:
#1 – 190 PSI
#2 – 188 PSI
#3 – 187 PSI
#4 – 181 PSI

Leak-down:
#1 – 30%
#2 – 5%
#3 – 5%
#4 – 15%

Intake vacuum at idle was ~ 20 inHg and remained strong and stable.

The engine timing should be corrected first, followed by a rescan and road test. Any remaining high-RPM/poor-acceleration complaint should then be investigated separately as a possible transmission concern.

Nissan B14 (GA16) | Limp Mode - Bad MAF or ECU?

This Nissan B14 underwent mechanical, fuel, exhaust and electrical testing to determine the cause of its drivability problems. The major fault was found during electrical testing.

Mechanical testing looked relatively good:
Compression: 156 | 162 | 158 | 160 PSI
Leak-down: 10% | 10% | 7% | 5%

Fuel pressure was also satisfactory, and no significant exhaust restriction was found.

Approximately 3.7 VOLTS was present on the shared sensor-ground circuit for the TPS, MAF and ECT sensors.

This voltage offset affected the sensor signals being interpreted by the ECU and caused the system to enter fail safe or limp mode operation.

A temporary direct ground was applied to the sensor-ground circuit. With the correct ground reference restored, the TPS, MAF and ECT readings returned to plausible values.

Further testing also indicated that three of the four IACV control circuits appear to be faulty.

The combined findings support an internal ECM fault, and ECU replacement is recommended.

Before another ECM is installed, the associated wiring and components should be thoroughly checked for external faults that could damage the replacement unit.
